Dossena's Brave Return After Gruesome Finger Injury in Liverpool vs Como
A low-key pre-season run-out at the AXA Training Centre produced no goals, but one unforgettable image.
Liverpool, who named a strong XI including Alexis Mac Allister, Federico Chiesa and Kostas Tsimikas, were held to a 0-0 draw by Como in a 70-minute friendly. The game itself rarely caught fire. One incident did.
Midway through the encounter, Como defender Alberto Dossena landed awkwardly while competing for an aerial ball with James McConnell and Will Wright. As he hit the turf, his hand took the weight. His finger took the damage.
Television cameras zoomed in. The shot revealed a severely dislocated finger, bent at an alarming angle, and LFCTV’s commentators quickly apologised on air to viewers who had just seen it in close-up.
For a moment, it looked like Dossena’s afternoon was over. He stayed down, surrounded by medical staff, as players from both sides turned away from the replay. The rhythm of a routine friendly stopped cold.
Then came the twist.
After on-pitch treatment from Como’s medical team, his finger was bandaged and secured. The 27-year-old got back to his feet, tested his grip, and signalled that he wanted to continue. He re-entered the action and saw out the final six minutes of the shortened contest.
With Liverpool’s attacking talent unable to find a breakthrough, Dossena’s brief return helped Como see out the clean sheet and leave with a quietly impressive result from an unusual, stop-start pre-season fixture.
On a day when the scoreboard stayed blank, it was the defender’s grimace, bandaged hand and refusal to leave the pitch that told the real story.
