Dusan Vlahovic's Contract Situation at Juventus: A Ticking Clock
Dusan Vlahovic’s free-kick against Hellas Verona should have been a release. Six months without a goal, 180 days of doubt, ended with one vicious swing of that left foot. The Allianz Stadium roared, his teammates swarmed him, and for a brief moment Juventus looked united around their No. 9 again.
The noise did not drown out the tension.
Behind the celebration sits a negotiation that has stalled at the worst possible time. Vlahovic, central to Juve’s plans as they scrap for a guaranteed fourth place in Serie A, is 56 days away from the end of his current deal. For a club that has built its short-term sporting project around him, that is a dangerously thin margin.
A star on a ticking clock
At Continassa, the message from the Juventus hierarchy has been consistent: there is a budget, and it will not be broken. The club, still reshaping its finances after years of heavy spending and off-field turbulence, has drawn hard lines.
Across the table, Vlahovic’s camp feels that pressure but is not yet bending to it.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus directors have already sat down five times with Milos Vlahovic, the striker’s father and representative. Those talks have not been fruitless. On the contrary, the player’s side has already put a major concession on the table.
Vlahovic is prepared to earn far less.
The proposed short-term renewal would mirror the structure of Kenan Yildiz’s contract, with the Serbian forward dropping to around €7 million per year. That is a huge step down from the €12m he is collecting this season, a cut that would normally signal a deal edging toward the finish line.
It hasn’t.
The real battle: commissions and bonuses
Salary is no longer the main battlefield. The real clash lies in the shadows of the contract: agent commissions and signing bonuses.
On those points, Juventus are immovable. The club has made it clear that while they are willing to adjust wages to keep their No. 9, they will not inflate the total package through hefty fees to intermediaries or a golden handshake at the moment of signing.
The result is paralysis. Meetings have been held, positions have been stated, but no one has crossed the line in the sand.
Inside the club, this stance is framed as necessity, not stubbornness. Long-term sustainability comes first, even if that means walking away from a striker they chased aggressively and built around. The message seeping out of the headquarters is blunt: these are the numbers, and they will not rise.
An ultimatum without the word
It is not written down, but it feels like an ultimatum.
Accept this, or look elsewhere.
Juve know what they are risking. Letting a 24-year-old centre-forward of Vlahovic’s calibre edge toward free agency is a dangerous game in a market where top strikers are scarce and expensive. Yet the club seems prepared to call his bluff, convinced that the badge and the project must outlast any individual.
Vlahovic’s camp, by contrast, can afford to wait. A strong finish to the season changes everything. More goals like the one against Verona would not only restore his aura on the pitch; they would also harden his leverage off it.
If he hits form at the right time and walks toward the summer without a deal, the scenario is obvious. A luxury free agent, in his mid-twenties, battle-tested in Serie A and in Europe, would not stay on the market for long. AC Milan, Bayern Munich and other heavyweights could circle quickly, attracted by the absence of a transfer fee and willing to pour more into wages and commissions instead.
Champions League now, uncertainty later
For the moment, there is a fragile truce. Both Juventus and Vlahovic’s entourage have agreed to park the contract saga and focus on the run-in. Champions League qualification is the shared objective, the minimum target for a club of Juve’s stature and a key factor in any financial planning.
But the cloud is there, hanging over every appearance, every goal, every missed chance. Each match is no longer just about points; it is about valuation.
Every time Vlahovic steps up to a free-kick or peels away from a defender, the question lingers in the background: is he striking for Juventus’ future, or for his own next destination?
The clock keeps ticking.
