Dynamo’s Vyacheslav Surkis Faces Tough Lessons in Bukovyna Defeat
Kyiv “Dynamo” went to Chernivtsi looking to build early-season momentum. They left with a 0–3 defeat, a bruised reputation, and a young goalkeeper living through the harshest lesson of his professional career.
Two Errors, One Brutal Scoreline
Vyacheslav Surkis, 20 years old and thrust into the starting role this season, had the kind of night that can define a career—one way or another.
The son of former Ukrainian Football Federation President Hryhoriy Surkis and nephew of club president Ihor Surkis was trusted with the gloves again for the “White-and-Blues.” The trust lasted barely 12 minutes before the first crack appeared.
Under pressure inside his own box, Surkis failed to properly clear the ball. Instead of safety, his hesitation opened the door for Bukovyna, who pounced and turned the mistake into the opening goal. One misjudgment, and Dynamo were chasing the game.
The second blow came after the break. In the 54th minute, a cross swung in from the wing turned into another nightmare moment. Surkis went up to deal with it but lost the aerial duel to Busko. The ball crossed the line, and the match report would later list it as an own goal by the Dynamo goalkeeper. Another error, another punishment.
Bukovyna kept their grip on the match, and Dynamo never recovered. The 0–3 scoreline told its own story.
Substitution After the Damage Is Done
Despite the two costly mistakes, Surkis stayed on the pitch. The coaching staff did not immediately reach for the bench. He continued in goal until the 60th minute, when head coach Oleksandr Kostyuk finally made the change, sending on Illia Olkhovyi.
Broadcast cameras later picked up a telling moment: the 20-year-old gesturing toward the bench, apparently initiating a discussion about a possible substitution. For a young goalkeeper, asking to come off in a game going wrong is as revealing as any save or error. It showed the weight of the evening pressing down on him.
From Europa League Debut to Harsh Domestic Reality
Surkis Jr. only became Dynamo’s starting goalkeeper at the beginning of this season, stepping in after Ruslan Neshcheret suffered an injury. His senior breakthrough came on a big stage: the Europa League qualifiers against PAOK from Thessaloniki, Greece. Since that debut, the academy product has started six matches in a row.
The rise has been quick. The scrutiny arrived even quicker.
Against Bukovyna, that trajectory stalled. Dynamo not only suffered a heavy defeat, they also looked fragile in a position where stability is everything. For a club built on expectations of dominance, this kind of loss hits hard.
Dynamo Stuck in Sixth, Questions Mount
The damage on the table is clear. Dynamo remain sixth in the Ukrainian Premier League, with six points from three matches. The numbers don’t look catastrophic, but the mood around the team tells a different story.
Kostyuk’s side has already been knocked out of European competition. Now, a comprehensive domestic defeat to Bukovyna adds another layer of pressure on a squad still trying to find its rhythm and identity.
Their next test comes against LNZ from Cherkasy on September 6. It will arrive quickly, and so will the questions. Does Kostyuk keep faith with Surkis after this ordeal, or does Neshcheret’s eventual return reshape the hierarchy in goal?
For Dynamo, the season is still young. For Vyacheslav Surkis, it already feels like a crossroads.
