The 2025–26 season proved difficult, with Newcastle finishing 12th in the Premier League following the sale of star striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool. Earlier in the summer, talks between Howe and club officials suggested they wanted to continue working together, but recent developments have changed that.

Sources from The Athletic indicate that Howe’s change of heart means he will depart immediately. Matthias Jaissle, currently managing Saudi Pro League's Al Ahli and formerly at Red Bull Salzburg, is poised to take over the reins at St James’ Park.
Reasons Behind Howe’s Departure
The situation at Newcastle has shifted dramatically since Howe reaffirmed his commitment a few months ago. According to Sky Sports News, Howe initially stayed because he believed a strong transfer window could help push the club back into the Premier League’s top four.
While new players such as 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Touré, 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur, and 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen have been signed, several key figures have left. Anthony Gordon moved to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali transferred to Tottenham Hotspur, and captain Bruno Guimarães might also be heading to Arsenal.
Concerns about the squad’s strength seem to have weighed heavily on Howe. A tough 4–1 loss in a friendly against Championship side Bristol City added to the pressure, prompting the decision to part ways. Howe reportedly plans to take some time away from football management.
