Enzo Maresca's Rotation Strategy Ahead of Porto Clash
Enzo Maresca is not expected to play it safe in Europe. Not this week, not with Porto away on Tuesday, and certainly not with a Manchester derby looming on the horizon.
The Manchester City head coach is being pushed towards rotation, and one of the headline calls could be a step back for Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez faces early reality check
The £125m midfielder was supposed to ease his way in. On Saturday, against Coventry City, he was named among the substitutes, primed for a late cameo at best. Then the plans were ripped up.
Nico O'Reilly felt a back problem in the warm-up. Within minutes, Fernandez went from spectator to starter, thrust into the Premier League tempo earlier than Maresca had planned. He lasted 76 minutes, working alongside Elliot Anderson in the middle, a solid if unspectacular full debut.
Now comes the real test of Maresca’s management. With only three days between Coventry and Porto, and a derby with Manchester United already casting a shadow over the week, City’s coach has every reason to lean on his squad depth. Fernandez, still adjusting, may be the one to step aside.
Bouaddi ready for the European stage
If Fernandez drops out, Ayyoub Bouaddi is the obvious beneficiary. The youngster is not walking into the unknown. He already carries Champions League minutes from his time at Lille, and that experience matters on nights like this.
Maresca can turn to Bouaddi without fear of the occasion swallowing him. This feels like the kind of fixture where legs, energy and European know-how combine into a compelling case for change. One switch in midfield could be part of a broader reshuffle.
The Porto trip is likely to bring up to four changes from the side that saw off Coventry, a response not to poor performance but to a punishing schedule.
Foden pushing to return, Ndiaye waits
Up front, Iliman Ndiaye’s debut told its own story. The Senegalese forward impressed but faded, eventually going off in the 87th minute with cramp. There is no suggestion of lasting damage, and he should be available for the Estadio do Dragao.
Availability, though, does not guarantee a starting place. Phil Foden is back to full fitness and pressing hard for a recall. With Jeremy Doku still sidelined by a calf issue, Foden’s return offers Maresca a sharper edge in the attacking line and another reason to tweak his XI.
The decision is straightforward on paper: protect Ndiaye after a physically demanding debut, unleash Foden from the start in Europe. On nights like this, quality in the final third often decides everything.
Fresh full-backs for a different battle
There could also be a new look down the flanks. Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol filled the full-back roles at the weekend, offering control and balance in domestic action. Porto away demands something slightly different.
Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri are waiting in reserve, both capable of adding drive and freshness on the outside. With William Gomes and Pepe likely to test City’s defensive structure, Maresca has the option to rotate without weakening his back line.
The logic is clear: keep the core intact, change the runners around it.
