Erling Haaland Cleared to Play for Manchester City vs Arsenal
Erling Haaland has been cleared to play for Manchester City in the Community Shield showdown with Arsenal – but he might have to wait for his moment.
The Norwegian sparked brief concern on Thursday when he stepped out of the final stages of City’s open training session. Any fears of a setback were quickly put to bed by Enzo Maresca, who confirmed his main striker is available for Cardiff.
“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the City boss said on Friday, drawing a line under the issue.
Haaland tormented Arsenal last season, scoring twice in three meetings, and his presence alone changes the temperature of this fixture. Yet sharpness is another matter. He did not play a single minute in pre-season after being granted an extended break following Norway’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals.
That opens the door for Omar Marmoush. The forward is in form, brimming with confidence after scoring twice in a 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid, and is pushing to lead the line from the start. Haaland, for once, may be the heavyweight option waiting in reserve.
Midfield Dynamics
City’s midfield is also in flux. With Tijjani Reijnders expected to complete his move to Al Qadsiah before the Arsenal game, Maresca must find a new partner for Mateo Kovacic in the middle.
Rico Lewis has already put his hand up, having started there in the win over K-League Allstars. The other headline option is £116million summer signing Elliot Anderson, who could make his Manchester City debut if selected. The timing is tight, though. Anderson has only just returned to training, as have Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki, so Maresca may turn instead to the more ready Nico Gonzalez.
Rodri is back at the club after minor back surgery, an important step for City’s season, but he remains in the rehabilitation phase. The Arsenal clash looks a touch too early for the midfield anchor to be risked.
Defensive Options
At the back, one of pre-season’s standout performers is pushing hard. Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed and is in contention to start at left-back. Should he get the nod, Josko Gvardiol would be expected to shift inside and line up alongside Ruben Dias at the centre of defence.
City arrive in Cardiff with their star striker fit, their new faces jostling for roles, and their structure still settling. For Maresca, this is more than a curtain-raiser. It’s the first real look at what his Manchester City might become.
