Erling Haaland will be available for Manchester City against Arsenal in the Community Shield. That is the line that cuts through everything else.

Behind the centre-forward, the picture is clearer. Phil Foden is expected to operate in the No 10 role, the creative hub behind the striker. Out wide, Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku bring pace and direct running, the sort of threat that can stretch Arsenal’s back line early and often.
Doku, fresh from signing a new contract, looks set to keep his place. His renewed deal underlines his growing status; his likely start underlines Maresca’s trust.
Midfield Puzzle Without Rodri
The real headache lies a little deeper.
With Tijjani Reijnders closing in on a move to Al Qadsiah, Maresca must settle on a partner for Mateo Kovacic in midfield. The Croatian is the constant. The question is who stands alongside him.

Rodri’s situation only adds to the calculation. The midfield anchor is back at the club after minor back surgery, but remains in rehabilitation. This match comes too soon for him, stripping City of their usual metronome and forcing a reshaped core in front of the defence.
