Ethan Williams Joins Peterborough United from Manchester United
Manchester United have quietly moved another young winger out of Old Trafford, with 20-year-old Ethan Williams sealing a permanent switch to Peterborough United.
While the noise around United centres on a midfield rebuild, a new left-back and the hunt for a striker, the club’s hierarchy has been just as ruthless at the fringes of the squad. The academy conveyor belt keeps turning, but not everyone stays on.
Williams is the latest to step off.
United cash in as Williams heads to League One
United confirmed the deal on their website, announcing that the academy forward has agreed a move to League One side Peterborough United, subject to registration. It’s a clean break: a permanent sale rather than another loan.
The fee is officially undisclosed, but talkSPORT’s chief transfer reporter Alex Crook has lifted the lid on the numbers. Posting on X, he revealed the move is worth “north of £750,000” to United, with performance-related add-ons built into the agreement. He labelled it a “good signing for Posh” – and at that price, Peterborough are clearly backing their judgment.
For United, it continues a clear summer pattern. Radek Vitek has gone to Middlesbrough, Tyler Fredricson to Lausanne-Sport, while Altay Bayindir has joined Celta Vigo on loan with a €4m option to buy. The message is blunt: if the club don’t see a first-team pathway, they will sell.
Peterborough land “highly-rated” winger
Peterborough wasted no time talking up their new arrival. In their own statement, the League One club described Williams as a “highly-rated Manchester United winger” and confirmed he has signed a long-term contract for what they called a “sizeable undisclosed fee.”
They were keen to stress his pedigree. Williams has just come off a pre-season tour with United, a trip that included a goal in the 5-0 win over Rosenborg. The deal was wrapped up at the club’s Bespoke Builds Training Ground, where the winger completed the paperwork.
For a club that prides itself on developing and selling attacking talent, this fits the Posh blueprint perfectly.
Manager Luke Williams is clearly excited by what he’s getting. “Ethan is a player that will give us another option in the wide areas, he is quick, direct and will be a threat and I am looking forward to working with him,” he said. “He has already got first team experience at a few clubs and joins us after being away with Manchester United on their pre-season tour, so he is fit and ready to go.”
United’s wider rebuild takes shape
This is not the headline act of United’s summer, but it is part of the same story. The club want a third midfielder through the door, a new left-back, and another centre-forward to compete with Benjamin Sesko. If that striker arrives, Joshua Zirkzee is expected to be sacrificed.
Plans for a new left winger were parked once it became clear Marcus Rashford would stay. On the other side of the ledger, the academy is being trimmed with equal intent.
Ethan Williams now becomes a test case of a different kind. United have decided he won’t make the grade at Old Trafford. Peterborough believe he can be a difference-maker in League One and beyond.
