Everton Seek Away Win Against Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Everton head to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday chasing two things that rarely arrive together in north London: momentum and an away win.
David Moyes has his side unbeaten after four Premier League games, with two wins and two draws putting them eighth on five points. The table looks healthy enough for September. The away record does not. Everton have failed to win any of their last six league games on the road and have lost five in a row away to Spurs in the Premier League. The venue has not been kind.
Moyes at least travels with a team that has shown it can dig itself out of trouble. Last weekend, Ainsley Maitland-Niles stepped up in stoppage time against Manchester United, thundering in a 25-yard strike to snatch a point. That moment kept the unbeaten run alive and underlined the character Moyes has tried to hard-wire into this squad.
The problem for the Everton manager is that Maitland-Niles’s heroics came from the bench because of an injury elsewhere. James Garner, whose absence opened the door for Maitland-Niles to make that impact, is still not considered fully fit. Moyes is not expected to risk him from the start.
That likely hands another opportunity to Hayden Hackney in central midfield. The youngster justified his selection against United by setting up Tyrique George’s equaliser, and he is in line to partner Harrison Armstrong in the engine room again. It is a pairing with energy and bite, but one that will be tested by Spurs’ movement and tempo.
Maitland-Niles, meanwhile, is set to continue at right-back, where he has been preferred to auxiliary defender Merlin Rohl. His versatility has become a valuable tool for Moyes, and his late goal last weekend only strengthened his grip on a starting place.
There is intrigue further forward as well. Jack Grealish, fresh from his second debut for the club, is expected to reclaim Brennan Johnson’s spot in the starting XI. Grealish brings control, craft and the ability to draw fouls high up the pitch, something Everton may need if they spend long spells without the ball.
Christian Norgaard remains sidelined until October, leaving Moyes with just the one significant fitness concern beyond Garner’s sharpness. Stability in selection has helped Everton build their early-season platform; the hope is that it now survives a severe test in north London.
