Decision Deadline Approaches for Qatar and Abu Dhabi F1 Races Amid Uncertainty
The fate of the final two Formula 1 races of the season, scheduled in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, remains unsettled. The events, planned for November 29 and December 6, face uncertainty due to regional tensions.
Background on Recent Race Cancellations
This season has already seen cancellations in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia because of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Malaysia stepped in unexpectedly to host the Bahrain Grand Prix earlier this month, filling the gap left behind.
Potential Changes and Safety Concerns
Safety worries for drivers, teams, and fans have raised doubts about whether the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races will proceed. Imola has been mentioned as a possible substitute venue, though no official announcement has been made.
Deadline Set for Final Call
Reports from GPblog indicate a decision is expected after the United States elections. Specifically, November 9 has been identified as the deadline for Imola to learn if it will host the final race of the 2026 season.
- GPblog: “Formula 1 teams had been told privately they might not travel to Qatar or Abu Dhabi, with the season potentially ending at Imola’s Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Teams have already arranged accommodations in the Italian region.”
Despite the turmoil, the official 2026 calendar hasn't been changed yet, partly due to the significant financial interests tied to Middle Eastern races. Cancelling these events would cause major revenue losses for commercial rights holders.
FIA's Statement on the Situation
Last week, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem spoke on the matter, affirming the intention to hold the Qatar and Abu Dhabi races unless safety risks arise.
"We will never send our staff, drivers, or officials anywhere we consider unsafe," he said. "I feel comfortable about these countries hosting races. If it were dangerous, I wouldn’t be here now or leave my family there."
"The media portrays something different than what we observe. We see no issues that would stop us from proceeding. I can’t predict the future, but today there’s nothing preventing the two races from happening."
Next Race on the Calendar
The 2026 Formula 1 season continues this weekend with the Mexican Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.
