Top UFC Bantamweight Farid Basharat Released Despite Strong Record
Farid Basharat, a top-ranked contender in the UFC bantamweight division, has been let go after completing his contract. MMA Fighting reported that the Afghan fighter, nicknamed "Ferocious," was released less than a year after his brother faced a similar fate despite maintaining a winning record.
Basharat was the more notable of the two siblings. According to Meta Rankings, he was positioned at number 9 in the 135-pound category. He entered the UFC undefeated with a 17-0 record, including seven wins inside the Octagon.
Notable Victories and Style
His list of defeated opponents features established names such as Chris Gutierrez, Jean Matsumoto, and Taylor Lapilus. Though only one of his UFC wins came by stoppage, Basharat was far from dull in the cage. Known for his relentless pace and seamless mix of striking and wrestling, he delivered numerous fights filled with technical exchanges and momentum swings.
UFC's Shift and Basharat's Future
The timing of Basharat's release coincides with the end of the fall Contender Series season. It seems the UFC is favoring fresh faces over proven talent, even if that means cutting fighters like Basharat who are just 29 years old and ranked among the division's best.
The decision raises questions about the promotion's claim to host the world's top athletes when they part ways with highly ranked competitors. Perhaps Basharat will join his brother in the Professional Fighters League, continuing his career elsewhere.
