Fenerbahce's €50m Bid for Milan's Rafa Leao
Fenerbahce have put a bold, unmistakable offer on the table for Rafael Leao, one that underlines just how desperate the Istanbul club are to end their decade-long title drought.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Turkish giants are ready to pay €50 million to prise the Portuguese winger away from Milan and make him the new face of their project under returning president Aziz Yildirim.
A contract built to turn heads
The numbers are striking.
Leao has reportedly been offered a net salary of €8 million per season on a five-year deal. On top of that, the proposal includes three hefty performance-related bonuses each year:
- €1.5 million if he makes more than 20 appearances
- €1.5 million if he hits 15 goals
- €1 million if Fenerbahce win the Süper Lig
For a player whose talent has never been in doubt, but whose consistency has often been questioned in Milan, it is a package designed to tempt him into a new chapter without sacrificing elite-level earnings.
Last season, Leao scored 10 goals and provided 3 assists in 31 competitive games for Milan. Enough to remind everyone of his threat. Not enough to silence the long-running debate around him.
Fenerbahce’s title obsession
This is not just about one player. It is about a club trying to break a cycle.
Fenerbahce have finished runners-up in each of the last four seasons and have not lifted the Süper Lig trophy since 2014. Watching Galatasaray reign while they fall just short has hardened the mood around the club. Under Yildirim, they are pushing back with money, ambition and a clear message: second place is no longer acceptable.
The transfer strategy reflects that urgency. Only weeks ago, Fenerbahce made Mason Greenwood their record signing, paying €39 million to Olympique Marseille. That figure, already a statement, now stands on the verge of being eclipsed by the Leao bid.
The spree has not stopped there. Vedat Muriqi arrived from Mallorca for €15.5 million, and Nathan Ake joined from Manchester City for €8 million. Each signing adds weight to the squad. Leao, though, would be different. He would be the marquee name, the player expected to tilt the title race.
Milan’s dilemma and the Karetsas angle
For Milan, the situation is delicate. Selling Leao would mean cashing in on a player who, on his day, can rip open any defence. It would also hand them a sizeable war chest.
Gazzetta dello Sport reports that, should Milan decide to accept Fenerbahce’s offer, they intend to reinvest part of the fee in Konstantinos Karetsas of KRC Genk. The Greece international is seen as a key attacking target.
There is a problem. Karetsas has reportedly already given his word to Borussia Dortmund. BVB have moved earlier and more decisively; Milan, by contrast, have not yet submitted a formal offer for the player. Time, and perhaps Leao’s future, will dictate whether that changes.
A crossroads for Leao
Leao has long divided opinion at San Siro. Brilliant in bursts, infuriating in others, he embodies the kind of player that splits a fanbase: match-winner or luxury? Cornerstone or cash asset?
A move to the Süper Lig would give him a fresh start in a league where he would be expected to dominate, not just decorate games. The pressure would be different, but no less intense. Fenerbahce’s supporters, starved of a league title for 10 years, are not in the mood for patience.
For now, the offer sits there: €50 million to Milan, €8 million a year and rich bonuses to the player, and the promise of a starring role in Istanbul.
