Gabriel Gudmundsson’s return to competitive action for Leeds United has been a long time coming. For months, his name sat on team sheets only in theory, a reminder of what Daniel Farke’s side were missing rather than a genuine option.

That wait ended with the 1-1 draw at Brighton.

The 27-year-old had not played a competitive minute for the Whites since April, his progress stalled by a hamstring injury that refused to be rushed. The road back has been slow, detailed and, at times, brutal. Gudmundsson made it clear who helped drag him through it.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, he praised the club’s physio staff for steering his recovery and getting him back on the pitch. Their work has put him in a position not just to return, but to contribute in a season that is starting to build a little momentum.

Brighton Match

Brighton away is rarely a gentle reintroduction. Gudmundsson knows that as well as anyone.

“I feel Brighton is a difficult place to come,” he said. “Last season we lost here quite badly, so I think we are doing some good stuff.”

The contrast mattered. Leeds had been humbled there last term; this time they left with a point and a performance that suggested a harder edge, a bit more resilience, a team less likely to fold when the pressure comes.

Farke’s side remain unbeaten in their first four matches of the season, a foundation rather than a finished product, but a platform all the same. The calendar offers no time to bask in it. Chelsea arrive next in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday, a tie that will test both depth and nerve.

Looking Ahead

For Gudmundsson, that is exactly where he wants to be: in the thick of it, part of the conversation again.

“The process starts now, and it is going to get better and better for us,” he said.

After months on the outside, he is back on the inside of that process. The question now is how far this Leeds side – with Gudmundsson finally back in the fold – can push it.
