Galatasaray’s empire under Okan Buruk is already record-breaking. May’s title win was their fourth in a row and their 26th overall, a haul that stretches the club’s lead at the top of Turkish football’s honours list. One more, and they move into territory no Super Lig side has ever reached: five consecutive championships.
The problem for them? Everyone else has finally had enough.
Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Trabzonspor have all thrown money, reputation and ambition at this summer window, ripping up the script that has so often ended with Galatasaray lifting the trophy. The sense is clear: if the champions are to write more history, they will have to do it the hard way.
Fenerbahce load up for one last push
Fenerbahce finished last season as runners-up, again. The title drought now stretches back to 2014, an uncomfortable statistic for a club of their size and self-image. This summer, the response has been blunt: sign stars, change the narrative.
The headline arrival is Romelu Lukaku, prised from Napoli and dropped straight into Istanbul as the new focal point of their attack. Around him, Fenerbahce have added Mason Greenwood from Olympique Marseille and Netherlands defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City, a trio that instantly raises both their ceiling and expectations.

Besiktas sharpen their edge
Across the city, Besiktas have chosen the same route: firepower.
The Black Eagles have moved decisively to strengthen their attack, landing Serbia international Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus and Belgian winger Leandro Trossard from Arsenal. Both come from the sharp end of European football. Both arrive with the clear brief of turning Besiktas into a side that can punish any slip from the reigning champions.

Salah shakes up the balance of power
The most eye-catching move of the summer, though, did not belong to an Istanbul club.
Trabzonspor have ripped up expectations by signing Egypt captain Mohamed Salah on a two-year deal, a transfer that sends a jolt through the league’s usual power dynamics. The Black Sea club have long seen themselves as the natural disruptors of Istanbul’s dominance. With Salah in claret and blue, that belief suddenly has global star quality attached.
Trabzonspor start their campaign in Istanbul on Saturday at 7 pm (1600GMT), away to Kasimpasa. All eyes will be on how quickly Salah settles and how dramatically he can tilt the title race.
New faces, new stories
Eighteen clubs will contest the 2026-27 season, and it is not just the title fight that feels refreshed.
Erzurumspor, Amedspor and Corum FK all arrive from the second tier. For Amedspor, it is a historic moment: a first-ever Super Lig campaign. Erzurumspor return after five years away, eager to prove they belong at this level. Corum FK, thrown straight into the deep end at Rams Park, could scarcely have asked for a tougher welcome.
