Galatasaray Renew Interest in Rafael Leao as Milan Adjusts Demands

Rafael Leao’s future at Milan is edging towards a decisive break, and Galatasaray have stepped back into the picture.

Multiple outlets in Italy and Turkiye report that the Istanbul giants are once again in direct talks with Milan over the Portugal international. At this stage, though, there is still no formal, written offer on the table.

The negotiation dance has changed because Milan’s position has changed. The club had been holding out for a package in the region of €50m plus €10m in add-ons. That figure scared off early admirers and left the Rossoneri waiting for a bid that never came.

No one got close. No one even put it in writing.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, tried to make a statement elsewhere. A €45m proposal for Gabriel Martinelli was rejected by Arsenal, who also made it clear the Brazilian had no interest in moving to Istanbul. That door slammed shut quickly, and attention swung back to Leao.

Reports from Sportitalia and Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu now paint the same picture: Galatasaray are in “intensive” talks with Milan, sensing an opportunity as the price begins to slip. The fee being discussed is now understood to be potentially under €50m plus bonuses, a significant drop from the original demands and a level that opens the market to clubs outside Europe’s financial elite.

Milan have held conversations with Benfica, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in recent weeks. None of those discussions produced a concrete offer, the gap between what Milan wanted and what the suitors were prepared to pay simply too wide to bridge. That gap is narrowing now.

Leao and Milan both expected a different summer. Once it became clear he was available, the forward and his entourage waited for a move from one of the heavyweights in Europe’s top five leagues. That call never came. Interest remained lukewarm, inquiries stayed informal, and the anticipated bidding war failed to materialise.

The clock is still ticking loudly in the background. Leao’s contract at San Siro runs until June 2028, but there is no intention on the player’s side to extend. Milan know what that means: delay the sale and the leverage drains away year by year. Sell now, or risk a slow erosion of value.

So the scenario is stark. A player who once looked destined for a blockbuster move within the traditional power leagues may instead be at the centre of an ambitious push from Istanbul. Galatasaray have already shown they are prepared to spend big and take bold swings in the market.

The talks are back on, the price is coming down, and Milan are ready to listen. The question now is whether Galatasaray are willing to be the club that finally puts their intentions in writing and tests just how far the Rossoneri are prepared to bend.
