Giannis Konstantelias Injured: Borussia Dortmund Faces Tough Decisions
Borussia Dortmund’s new hope has barely arrived and is already gone for months.
Giannis Konstantelias, the 23-year-old Greek signed from PAOK Saloniki for 26 million euros, tore his cruciate ligament in the 2-0 opening win over Hamburger SV on matchday one. A dream debut with a goal, followed by the worst possible diagnosis. BVB will have to do without him “for several months”.
On X, the club tried to rally around their new signing. “The entire BVB family is behind you, Giannis! You will come back stronger!” read the post from the Bundesliga runners-up.
Sporting managing director Lars Ricken did not hide how hard the blow landed. “This news hits us hard, because Giannis has already shown in a very short space of time why we see him as a great player for Borussia Dortmund. For now, however, his and our focus is first and foremost on his recovery. Giannis has our full support in that.”
The injury itself came from almost nothing. Early in the second half, Konstantelias twisted his knee in what looked like an innocuous challenge. He stayed down for lengthy treatment, then walked off under his own power. But the faces told the story: the player grimacing, staff staring at the turf, no one really believing this would end well. The scans confirmed their fears.
A hole in the attack – and a ticking clock
Now comes the brutal, practical question: how do Dortmund replace him?
The timing could hardly be more awkward. The summer transfer window closes on Tuesday, 1 September, at 8 p.m., and those in charge at BVB are suddenly back on high alert.
Ricken had already hinted on Saturday evening that the club might be forced into action. “Depending on how serious the injury actually is, we will shape our next steps accordingly. One thing is certain, though: we won't be doing nothing over the next three days.”
So the phones will be busy again in Dortmund.
One solution is already in the dressing room. Fabio Silva, currently very dissatisfied with his situation and repeatedly linked with a quick exit after just one season, suddenly finds the door out not quite so open. Konstantelias’ absence changes the equation. Minutes that seemed out of reach may now be there for the taking. A departure? For the moment, that looks unlikely.
The Sancho question returns
And then there is the name that never really disappears in Dortmund: Jadon Sancho.
Still without a club after his contract at Manchester United expired, the 26-year-old could once again become a serious option for the BVB hierarchy. He fits the profile almost perfectly. Like Konstantelias, Sancho is the type of player who can explode from a standing start, beat a man, and inject chaos and speed into a static game. He knows the club, the stadium, the expectations.
Speculation about yet another Sancho return never fully went away in recent weeks and months, even if it quietened after the arrivals of Konstantinos Karetsas and Konstantelias. Now the conversation is back on the table.
From a financial standpoint, the move is tempting. Sancho would be available on a free transfer, a low-risk deal in terms of fee. The real issue is his salary. For a third spell in black and yellow, he would have to accept a significant pay cut.
Then comes the sporting gamble. Can the former wonderkid still reach his old level? His recent loan spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa offered few answers and even fewer highlights. The explosive winger who once lit up the Bundesliga has not been seen for a while.
Dortmund must now decide: trust the internal solutions like Fabio Silva and the emerging Karetsas, or roll the dice on Sancho one more time.
The clock is ticking, Konstantelias is out, and a crucial piece of BVB’s attacking puzzle is missing. What they do in the next few days will say a lot about how bold this Dortmund side really wants to be.
