Giovanni Reyna Leaves Bundesliga for Strasbourg: A New Chapter
Giovanni Reyna’s long German chapter is over. The USMNT playmaker has left Borussia Mönchengladbach and signed for Strasbourg, drawing a line under seven turbulent years in the Bundesliga.
He arrived in Germany as a prodigy. Borussia Dortmund plucked him from New York City FC’s academy in 2019, betting big on a teenager with vision, swagger, and a highlight reel that seemed to grow by the week. For a time, it looked like a masterstroke. Reyna surged through the ranks, quickly establishing himself as one of the league’s most exciting young attacking talents, a creative fulcrum who could glide between the lines and decide games with a single touch.
Then the brakes went on.
Injuries cut into his rhythm, then his confidence. Just as he looked ready to explode, muscles went, momentum vanished, and seasons began to fracture into frustrating stretches of rehab and short-lived comebacks. Form followed the same stop-start pattern. The promise never disappeared, but the continuity did.
Dortmund tried to reboot his trajectory with a loan to Nottingham Forest in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign. A spell in the Premier League was supposed to sharpen him, toughen him, reintroduce him to the chaos of a weekly fight for points. It never quite caught fire. The move did little to jolt his club career back onto its original, soaring path.
Last summer, Reyna switched from Dortmund to Borussia Mönchengladbach, a fresh start inside a familiar league. It looked a sensible step: a club with room for a creative hub, a system that could lean into his strengths. The numbers tell a different story. One goal, one assist, 20 competitive appearances. Flickers, not flames.
Inside Gladbach, there was no doubt about the talent, only frustration that it surfaced too rarely. Head of sports Rouven Schröder summed it up bluntly: Reyna, he said, is an excellent player who only showed “glimpses” of his potential in his year at the club, unable to consistently display his ability because of a series of injuries. The farewell came with warm wishes and an acknowledgment that the next step, in France, is an “exciting challenge.”
The contrast with his international standing is striking. For the USA, Reyna is not a fringe figure fighting for minutes; he is a pillar. He has already collected 43 caps and played in all five of his country’s matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, stamping his mark on the tournament with a stunning outside-of-the-boot strike against Paraguay. On the biggest stage, in national colors, the player everyone expected to see in Germany reappeared.
Across his time with Dortmund and Gladbach, Reyna leaves the Bundesliga with 125 appearances, 16 goals, and 13 assists. Those numbers hint at influence, but they also feel like a partial story — respectable output from a player widely tipped to produce much more.
Now comes Strasbourg, and with it, a different kind of test. New league. New language. New expectations. After seven years of promise, setbacks, and flashes of brilliance in Germany, Reyna arrives in France not as the unknown wonderkid, but as a 23-year-old at a crossroads, still young enough to rewrite the narrative.
The question is no longer whether he has the talent. It’s whether this move finally gives him the platform — and the continuity — to show it every week.
