Goretzka Sidelined as Aston Villa Faces Tough Start
Leon Goretzka’s new chapter in England has been abruptly paused almost before it began.
On Monday, the 31-year-old Aston Villa midfielder announced on Instagram that he has to step away for a short spell and will not be available again until after the international fixtures at the end of September and the start of October.
“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after the time without matches,” Goretzka wrote. “It is frustrating, but I need this short break now so I can come back at full strength.”
The timing could hardly be worse for Villa. The Europa League winners’ fans had embraced their high-profile summer arrival, and Goretzka made a point of thanking them in the same post for the warm welcome, saying he felt in the right place and comfortable at the club. Now he intends to use the coming weeks purely to recover and reset.
The medical reality is blunt: he will miss at least four more matches. Villa head to Bruges in the Champions League on Tuesday still hunting their first points of the campaign. Around that European assignment sit two Premier League fixtures and a League Cup tie, all of which they must now navigate without one of the most experienced midfielders in the squad.
A bruising beginning for Emery and Villa
The broader picture is already troubling. After eight trophy-laden years at Bayern Munich, the 73-cap Germany international arrived at Villa Park on a free transfer, billed as a statement signing for a club determined to push on. Instead, the Birmingham side have stumbled badly out of the blocks.
Three league matches into the new season, Unai Emery’s team are still without a win and without a goal. The optimism of the summer has been replaced by a cold, early-season reality: Villa have made a mess of their start.
The pressure eased only slightly at the weekend. After back-to-back defeats, they finally collected their first point of the campaign against Nottingham Forest. It stopped the rot, but did little to disguise the scale of the rebuild Emery is wrestling with.
Villa lost four key players from their recent successful era in the summer window: Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins all departed, ripping out the spine of a side that had surged in previous seasons. Goretzka was supposed to be part of the solution to that upheaval. For now, he can only watch.
The schedule will not wait. On 10 October, Villa return from the international break to face Brentford FC. By then, they will know whether this rocky opening was just an early wobble or the start of something far more serious.
