Guglielmo Vicario Joins Juventus from Tottenham—Loan Deal Confirmed

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is heading back to Italy, with Juventus winning the race for his signature after Fabrizio Romano delivered his trademark “here we go” confirmation.

The deal, agreed between Spurs and the Turin giants, is structured as a loan with an option to buy rather than an obligation. It suits everyone. Juventus secure a new No.1 candidate without a heavy immediate outlay, while Tottenham move on a player who wanted a return to Serie A and had slipped down the pecking order in north London.

Vicario’s departure had been looming for months. His season at Spurs unravelled after hernia surgery in March, when Antonin Kinsky stepped in. By the end of a chaotic campaign that saw Tottenham escape relegation by just two points on the final day, the Italian was firmly bracketed among the underperformers in a squad that never found its balance.

Juventus, meanwhile, had been hunting a goalkeeper upgrade and initially pushed hard for Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. That pursuit collapsed, forcing the Bianconeri to pivot – and fast. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported that once the Martinez avenue closed, Juventus “diverted their attention” and went all-in on Vicario, accelerating talks with Spurs.

The pace picked up quickly. Di Marzio detailed how negotiations between the clubs were “continuing at a rapid pace” as they worked towards a loan with an option to buy – a formula designed to satisfy Juventus’ financial planning and Tottenham’s willingness to respect the player’s desire to go home. Vicario, for his part, was described as ready to return to Serie A.

One telling sign the move had reached a decisive phase came off the pitch. Vicario’s agent travelled to Turin initially to work on a separate deal for Jhon Lucumí, but once in the city he sat down with Juventus’ hierarchy to push the goalkeeper talks over the line. From there, the operation moved into what Di Marzio called an “extremely heated phase”, with all sides working intensely to close the agreement.

The pressure finally told. Romano announced on X: “Juventus agree deal to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham, here we go! Spurs accept loan proposal with buy option clause – not mandatory. Vicario wanted the move and leaves #THFC today. New goalkeeper for Juventus.”

David Ornstein of The Athletic backed that up, confirming that Tottenham had accepted Juventus’ bid – a loan with an option to buy the 29-year-old Italy international next summer – and that all parties expect the signing to go through after Juve abandoned their Martinez chase.

For Vicario, it is a reset. For Juventus, it is a calculated gamble on a keeper with something to prove. For Spurs, it underlines a clear break from a season they will not want to relive.
