Ruud Gullit Calls Rashford Best Signing of Summer for Manchester United
Marcus Rashford has not kicked a competitive ball for Manchester United since returning from Barcelona, yet one of Europe’s greats is already calling his comeback the deal of the window.
Ruud Gullit, former Chelsea boss and Dutch legend, believes United’s own academy product could prove to be the standout “signing” in the Premier League this season – simply by walking back through the door at Old Trafford.
Barcelona revival, United dilemma
Rashford’s United story looked close to its final chapter 12 months ago. The England forward left for Barcelona on loan last season with a £26 million option to buy attached, and few inside or outside the club expected him to come back.
In Spain, he rebuilt himself. Forty-nine appearances. Fourteen goals. Fourteen assists. A player who had looked burdened in Manchester suddenly played with zip, confidence and, crucially, freedom.
Barcelona, though, walked away from the permanent deal. The Catalan club chose not to activate the £26m clause, sending Rashford back to a United side that had already budgeted for his exit and hoped to cash in on one of their highest earners.
United set a £40m asking price. The market shrugged. Serious bidders never truly materialised, at least not at that figure, and what once felt like an inevitable parting of ways has turned into something very different: a reset.
Gullit: ‘Something was wrong in his previous environment’
That turnaround has caught the eye of Gullit, who sees Rashford’s Spanish spell as a turning point not just for the player, but potentially for United.
“Marcus Rashford could end up being the best signing,” Gullit told Sport Witness. “He learned a lot at Barcelona and played much better, with far more freedom, than he ever did at Manchester United.
“Was that his fault, or was it down to the environment at the club? It’s very easy to point fingers at the player. But if he performs well elsewhere, it suggests something was wrong in his previous environment.
“So that could prove to be a fantastic move, for Manchester United if he stays, and performs like he did at Barcelona.”
The message is blunt: the problem may never have been Rashford alone. Change the surroundings, change the player. Now United must prove they can give him that same freedom in their own shirt.
Carrick ready to use ‘different’ Rashford
Inside the club, Michael Carrick is already planning with Rashford, not without him.
Speaking after United’s pre-season draw with Leeds, the manager made it clear the 26-year-old is firmly in his thoughts for the new campaign. Their relationship stretches back years, from dressing-room colleagues to manager and senior pro.
“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick told ITV1. “I've known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different.
“And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back. He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
No fanfare. No grand declarations. Just the quiet expectation that Rashford will be there when it all starts again.
A crucial contract window
The stakes are clear. Rashford is now entering the final two years of the lucrative contract he signed in 2023, worth around £325,000 per week. This is the decision window for both player and club: either he re-establishes himself as a cornerstone of United’s future, or the next 18 months become a long goodbye.
He watched from the sidelines during the friendly against Leeds, but is expected to travel for the final pre-season fixture against AC Milan. Those minutes will matter. So will the body language. So will the sharpness that defined his Barcelona season.
Earlier in the summer, Rashford was understood to favour a clean break – a permanent move away to continue his revival elsewhere. The market closed that door. Now circumstance has forced a rethink, and with it comes opportunity.
United lacked a clinical, confident edge too often last season. If Rashford brings the physical condition and mental clarity he showed in La Liga back to Manchester, Gullit’s prediction stops sounding bold and starts sounding obvious.
Because if the “best signing” of the Premier League summer is already in United’s dressing room, the real question is whether the club can finally give him the stage to prove it.
