Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane has opened up about England’s crushing semi-final loss to Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, calling it the most painful setback of his international career. The Three Lions captain described the defeat as especially hard to take because the team seemed to lose their identity during the match.

Kane revealed he couldn’t even watch the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, instead choosing to play golf in New York to distract himself.

"I've been to finals and semifinals and been so close. Each one hurts differently. This one hurt more than any other. Probably even more than when I missed that penalty in Qatar because of how it all happened," Kane said.
His frustration comes from what he sees as the team backing away mentally and tactically. "It just felt like it wasn’t us as a team. It wasn’t the team we wanted to be or said we would be. Sometimes when you go against your own beliefs and lose, it feels ten times worse," he added.
Using Defeat as Motivation for Euro 2028
Kane wants honest discussions within the squad to address why they struggle against top teams in the final stages of major tournaments. He insists this pain should drive the team to maintain their identity during high-pressure moments.
"It’s something we haven’t managed to do late in tournaments against the bigger, better nations," Kane explained. "It could be down to personalities, mentality, or how we want to play in those games."
He sees the upcoming Nations League as a crucial opportunity to build momentum. "Some see the Nations League as less important, but when you haven’t won a trophy for so long, winning something with England could push us forward heading into the Euros," he said, encouraging his teammates to take the competition seriously.
England Faces Spain With a Weakened Squad
England’s next challenge is a Nations League match against Spain at Wembley. This fixture carries extra significance since Spain beat England in the last European Championship final and later reached the World Cup final.
Preparation has been tough due to injuries and recent player withdrawals, adding to an already depleted squad. Kane, who had criticized player dropouts in late 2024, showed more understanding this time around, noting the demanding Premier League schedule compared to his winter break in Germany. He expressed confidence in his teammates’ ability to manage their fitness going forward.
