Harry Kane Eyes Potential NFL Career After MLS Move, Reveals Future Plans
Harry Kane, the Bayern Munich striker and England captain, shared intriguing thoughts about his plans after retiring from top-flight football. Ahead of England’s UEFA Nations League match against Spain, Kane suggested that a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) could lead to a secondary career as an NFL placekicker within five to six years.
Kane Looks Beyond His Peak at Bayern
At 33, Kane is enjoying a remarkable run, having scored 73 goals last season for Bayern Munich. This performance has positioned him as a contender for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. Although he seems close to signing a new contract with Bayern, the England captain is already thinking about life beyond his current career.
During a press conference at St George's Park, Kane expressed how a switch to MLS might open doors for him in the NFL, a crossover rarely seen but not without precedent.
Soccer-to-NFL Pathway Has Examples
Kane highlighted that his expertise in penalty-taking could translate well into placekicking in American football. He mentioned Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, who transitioned from MLS's Toronto FC to become one of the NFL's most precise kickers, proving the transition between sports is possible.
Another example is former Tottenham forward Clive Allen, who played for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe, showcasing an earlier connection between soccer players and American football.
Kane's consistent accuracy and composure under pressure add weight to his ambitions, combined with his admiration for NFL legend Tom Brady.
Kane Sees NFL as a Realistic Goal
"Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two maybe with the seasons," Kane told reporters via The Athletic. "That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously. It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let's put it that way."
On the technical side, Kane said: "I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure, technique. If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than any other sport. If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take maybe six months to a year of trying to practice before."
Current Focus Remains on Football
Kane emphasized that his NFL aspirations are secondary while he's performing at the highest level in Europe. "If people know I am still on the top of my game here with football, it is not a conversation that would be had," he said. At 33, he wants to make the most of his remaining peak years.
This isn’t the first time Kane has mentioned such an idea—back in 2019, he spoke about possibly switching to the NFL in 10 to 12 years. With talks progressing at Bayern and MLS growing as a late-career option, Kane’s unique two-sport plan is starting to take shape.
