Hartlepool United Faces Double Injury Blow: Merrick and Kouogun Out
Hartlepool United have been dealt a brutal double injury setback, with goalkeeper Max Merrick ruled out for six weeks and defender Max Kouogun facing the prospect of ankle surgery.
Manager Kevin Clark confirmed the blows after a week that has undercut the momentum of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking.
Merrick back at Chelsea and out for six weeks
Merrick’s afternoon at the weekend lasted barely half an hour. The on-loan Chelsea keeper pulled up with a thigh problem and was forced off, cutting short what had been a solid start to his spell with Pools.
He has now returned to his parent club for treatment, and the diagnosis is exactly what Clark feared.
"Max obviously went straight back down to Chelsea with it being his parent club and the medical facilities they have there," Clark told BBC Radio Tees. "He's had a scan.
"We spoke with their medical team - not good news, but probably what we expected. He's got a thigh tear, so he'll be out for six weeks."
Chelsea’s resources will now take over the bulk of his rehab.
"You can imagine what a top elite European club has in terms of facilities and the attention that they can have in terms of the amount of medical staff that they have as well.
"He'll get the very best of attention there and then when he gets close to that return, he'll come back up with us. We're keeping in touch with him every day, making sure that everything's okay."
Merrick’s absence immediately reshapes Hartlepool’s goalkeeping department. Summer signing Nathan Fisher, who replaced him against Woking, is now in line to start Friday night’s game against Kidderminster Harriers (19:45 BST).
That promotion would push player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith up to the role of No. 2.
Kouogun facing months out
If Merrick’s news stings, Kouogun’s situation cuts even deeper.
The defender suffered an ankle injury after landing awkwardly in the defeat to Eastleigh in August. Scans have since confirmed ligament damage and a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
"Following on from that, we've had a scan on Max Kouogun with his ankle issue when he landed in the Eastleigh game, he's got some kind of ligament damage, so Max will be out for a minimum of two months," Clark said.
The next step could stretch that lay-off even further.
"We're going to see a consultant to see whether it needs surgery, if that would be the case, that would take up to three months. So that's a big blow for us because Max is a big player for us in every sense of the word."
Losing a key defender for at least eight weeks, and potentially twelve, leaves a sizeable hole in both Hartlepool’s back line and dressing room.
Replacement hunt on the table
With Merrick sidelined and the pecking order shuffled, Clark is already weighing up whether Hartlepool need to move in the market to protect themselves over the next six weeks.
He is set for talks with Chris Maxwell, head of football operations at club advisors Bromby & Partners, to explore bringing in another goalkeeper to cover Merrick’s absence.
For now, Fisher steps into the spotlight, Smith moves up a rung, and Hartlepool head into a key run of fixtures without two of their Maxes. How they navigate this spell may say plenty about where their season is heading.
