Hervé Koffi’s rise in Ligue 1 has been one of the quieter success stories of the past year. Now it is about to push him back across the border and into the Champions League spotlight.
According to La DH, the RC Lens goalkeeper is set to join Union Saint-Gilloise on loan with an option to buy, a move that underlines both his value and his current dead end in the north of France.
From Angers standout to Lens surplus
Koffi is coming off a superb season with SCO Angers, where the Burkinabé international established himself as one of the standout goalkeepers in Ligue 1. Week after week he delivered the kind of commanding, assured performances that turn a loanee into a fan favourite and a coach’s guarantee.
He returns to Lens this summer with his stock high but his path blocked. At 29, entering what should be his prime years, he finds himself squeezed by internal competition, notably from 21-year-old Robin Risser. The message is clear: minutes will be scarce if he stays.
So he will not. The move to Union Saint-Gilloise offers a way out of the bottleneck and a route back to a club environment where he is not just cover, but a central piece of the plan.
A familiar league, a bigger stage
Belgium is no unknown frontier for Koffi. He has already built a solid reputation there, first with Royal Excel Mouscron in 2020-21, then across three seasons with Royal Charleroi SC from 2021 to 2024. He knows the rhythm of the Pro League, the grounds, the weather, the pressure.
This time, though, the stakes rise.
Union Saint-Gilloise bring Champions League football into the equation, and with it a different level of scrutiny. Koffi will be asked not only to stabilise a defence but to anchor a side stepping onto Europe’s biggest stage.
He arrives with a clear mission: replace Kjell Scherpen. The 26-year-old Dutchman moved this summer to Ipswich Town, newly promoted to the Premier League, leaving a sizeable void between the posts.
