Hull City Break Transfer Record to Sign Nobel Mendy

Hull City have ripped up their transfer history to bring in Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further year, becoming the most expensive player in the club’s history. The fee remains undisclosed, but Hull confirmed it eclipses the £20m plus add-ons they paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos.

That figure had only just overtaken the previous benchmark from 2016, when Hull spent £13m to sign Ryan Mason from Tottenham. Now Mendy sits at the top of that list, a clear statement of intent.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” Mendy said after completing the move.

“I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Mendy arrives on the back of a standout year in Spain. Having started his career at Paris FC, he moved through Real Betis before joining Rayo Vallecano, where he scored twice in 28 games in his only La Liga season.

His final outing for Rayo came on a huge stage: the Conference League final, where they were beaten by Crystal Palace. The year before, he had also reached the same competition’s final with Real Betis, losing to Chelsea. Two European finals in two seasons, no winners’ medal yet, but plenty of big-game experience for a 21-year-old defender.

On the international front, Mendy has already broken into the Senegal setup, winning his first cap in March against The Gambia.

Hull have paid record money for him. Now comes the real test: can their new defensive cornerstone turn that investment into Premier League stability?
