Hull City Break Transfer Record for Nobel Mendy
Hull City have ripped up their transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.
The 21-year-old centre-back arrives on a five-year contract, with an option for a further year, in a move that eclipses the fee paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos. That deal was worth more than £20m including add-ons; this one goes higher.
The club have not disclosed the exact figure, but the message is clear: Mendy is now Hull’s most expensive signing.
It marks a huge leap from the previous long-standing record, the £13m spent on Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason back in 2016. Hull are operating in a different market now, and Mendy is the clearest symbol of that shift.
The defender, who has one cap for Senegal, spoke with obvious pride after completing the move.
"I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well," he said. "I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.
"I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it."
Mendy arrives with a growing reputation from Spain.
He began his career at Paris FC before heading to La Liga, where he spent last season with Rayo Vallecano. There he scored twice in 28 appearances, showing not just defensive solidity but a threat at the other end. His final game for the club came on a grand stage: the Conference League final, where Rayo fell to Crystal Palace.
It was not his first taste of that competition’s showpiece. The year before, he reached the same final with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea. Two finals, two defeats – but invaluable European experience for a defender still in the early years of his career.
On the international stage, Mendy made his Senegal debut in March against The Gambia, a first step into a set-up rich with defensive talent.
Now comes the step he has been chasing since childhood: English football, and the demands that come with a record-breaking price tag. Hull have paid for potential and presence at the back. Mendy has made it clear he is ready for the challenge.
