Hull City have torn up their own transfer history to land centre-back Mendy from Rayo Vallecano, sealing a club-record deal that underlines their intent before stepping back into the Premier League spotlight.
The 21-year-old Senegal international has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with Hull inserting an option to extend his stay by a further season. It is a long-term bet on a defender they believe can anchor their top-flight return.
Club officials have not revealed the fee, but they have been clear on one point: it is bigger than anything Hull have ever paid. That includes the sum spent only weeks ago on Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who joined from Olympiacos for a package worth more than £20 million including add-ons. For a 21-year-old, Mendy’s CV already carries the weight of major European occasions.
In his single La Liga campaign with Rayo Vallecano, he made 28 appearances and chipped in with two goals, showing he can threaten in the opposition box as well as protect his own. But it is his European run that really stands out.
He has reached the Conference League final in back-to-back seasons. This year he went all the way with Rayo Vallecano before losing to Crystal Palace. The year before, he was part of a Real Betis squad that marched to the same showpiece, only to fall to Chelsea.
