Ibrahima Konate Joins Real Madrid on Free Transfer
Real Madrid have moved decisively in the market again, tying up a four-year deal for Ibrahima Konate after the France defender failed to agree new terms with Liverpool.
The 27-year-old will arrive in Madrid on a free transfer at the end of June, signing a contract that runs until 30 June 2030. The European champions confirmed they have reached an agreement for Konate “for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons”, adding yet another powerful piece to their already imposing squad.
For Liverpool, it is the end of a significant chapter. Konate joined the club from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m on a five-year deal and quickly grew into a central figure at Anfield. Across all competitions he made 183 appearances, helping the Reds to the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
The split did not come down to sentiment, but to numbers. Talks over an extension broke down over a gap in how player and club valued his role and his wages. With no agreement in sight, Konate chose to walk away at the end of his contract, leaving Liverpool without a fee and Real Madrid with a major acquisition at no transfer cost.
The timing adds another layer. Konate is currently with France at the 2026 World Cup, his future now settled as he focuses on international duty. Madrid, for their part, have once again acted early, securing a prime-age centre-back who fits both their present demands and long-term planning.
Konate recently admitted he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye” to Liverpool supporters when the Reds played their final Premier League game of the season against Brentford on 24 May.
At the time, he said, “I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you.”
That finality is no longer in doubt. The next time Konate walks out in front of a vast, expectant crowd, it will be in white, not red – and under the lights of the Santiago Bernabéu, with the weight of Real Madrid’s ambitions on his shoulders.
