Idaho Defeats Grand Canyon 1-0 in Turf Match
MOSCOW, Idaho – One mistake on the turf was all it took.
Grand Canyon opened its Pacific Northwest swing with a 1-0 defeat at Idaho on Friday inside the Kibbie Dome, a game that promised goals from both sides but was decided before it had a chance to breathe.
Early gift, lasting damage
Six minutes in, Idaho pounced.
A routine clearance from GCU goalkeeper Emma Knack turned anything but. Her mis-hit ball dropped straight to Vandals senior forward Calli Chiarelli, who suddenly found herself staring at the kind of chance strikers spend careers chasing. She steadied with a couple of touches, saw an almost unguarded net, and drilled home the only goal of the night.
From there, Grand Canyon never truly recovered in the attacking third.
The Lopes went the full 90 without registering a shot on target, just the second time that has happened under head coach Derek Cissell, a span that stretches back to the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance at No. 3 USC. Idaho’s back line smothered half-chances, and when GCU did work the ball into dangerous areas, the final ball never arrived.
Defense responds, but attack stalls
After the early lapse, GCU’s defense tightened. The Lopes kept their shape, cut out service, and gave Knack a quieter evening than the scoreline might suggest. Idaho managed only three more shots on frame, all handled by Knack as Grand Canyon stayed within one kick of leveling right to the final whistle.
Idaho, though, never let go of control.
The Vandals, now 5-1-1, stretched their winning run to three matches and claimed their first victory over Grand Canyon after losing in Phoenix last season. Goalkeeper Paula Flores secured her 22nd career shutout, rarely troubled as Idaho protected Chiarelli’s early strike with discipline and composure.
Road test rolls on
For Grand Canyon (3-2-2), the loss snaps a three-match unbeaten streak and leaves a sting, not just for the result but for the lack of attacking threat on the night.
The response has to come quickly.
Next up is Eastern Washington on Sunday in Cheney, a team that opened the season with five straight wins before finally stumbling against Wyoming. The Eagles will be rested. They’ll be confident. And they’ll be waiting.
