Inter's €30m Bid for Tottenham's Spence: Defender Agrees to Serie A Return
Inter have made their move for Tottenham full-back Spence, tabling a formal opening bid of more than €30 million for the 25-year-old as they look to strengthen Christian Chivu’s defence.
After a hectic summer of Premier League trading, Spurs look ready to cash in on a player who has slipped down Roberto De Zerbi’s pecking order, despite his growing reputation with England on the international stage.
Inter step up – and Spence is on board
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter’s proposal, worth in excess of €30m, underlines the Nerazzurri’s determination to land Spence and reshape their back line. It would also bring the former Nottingham Forest standout back to Italy, where he previously spent a loan spell with Genoa.
The move has cleared a major hurdle. According to GiveMeSport, Spence has already given the green light and reached full agreement on personal terms with the Milan club, signalling a clear desire to test himself in Serie A again.
The pressure now shifts from the player to the clubs.
Spurs dig in over valuation
Tottenham are not prepared to sign off just yet. While Inter’s €30m (£25.6m) offer is significant, Spurs are understood to be holding out for at least €35m (£30m) plus performance-related add-ons.
Inside the Tottenham boardroom, there is awareness that interest has not been limited to Italy. Other Premier League sides have tracked Spence, and the club believe his price should reflect his elevated profile after a sensational World Cup campaign with England.
For Spurs, this is about timing as much as money. The defensive rebuild is already well under way.
Defensive shake-up leaves Spence squeezed out
Spence’s potential exit comes in the middle of a major reshaping of Tottenham’s back line. The club have moved aggressively in this window, bringing in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke to reinforce De Zerbi’s options.
On the right, Pedro Porro has doubled down on his status as first choice by signing a new long-term contract. That decision has pushed Spence even further from regular minutes.
With Robertson, Destiny Udogie and Porro all ahead of him in the full-back rotation, the route to consistent game time in north London has narrowed to almost nothing. A move abroad now looks like his clearest path to maintaining the momentum of his international performances.
Inter out in front after Premier League interest cools
Inter’s position as frontrunners has been helped by the cooling of interest elsewhere. Both Manchester United and Liverpool had been linked with Spence at different points in the summer, raising the prospect of an all-English tug-of-war.
That never materialised. Romano has since clarified that Liverpool’s supposed push for the defender was exaggerated, with nothing advanced between club and player. With Anfield out of the frame and no concrete bid from Old Trafford, Inter have been able to steal a march on the competition.
Now the deal rests on one final axis: the negotiating table. The player wants the move, Inter have shown their intent, and Tottenham have named their price.
Whether the Italians bridge that gap will decide if Spence’s next chapter is written under the lights of San Siro or from the fringes of De Zerbi’s squad in north London.
