Inter Milan Signs Djed Spence for £30m
Inter Milan have agreed a £30m deal to sign England defender Djed Spence from Tottenham, sealing a move that could reshape the 24-year-old’s career and Antonio Conte’s wing-back options in one hit.
The agreement includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause for Spurs, with Spence given permission to travel to Italy for his medical while the final details were thrashed out. Those talks have now produced a total package worth £30m, a sizeable profit on what Tottenham originally paid.
From World Cup stage to San Siro
Spence arrives in Milan on the back of a standout summer. He was one of England’s key performers in their run to third place at the World Cup, his direct running and athleticism catching the eye on the biggest stage.
Yet his path at Spurs was increasingly blocked. Pedro Porro has nailed down the right-back role, while on the left Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza and Ben Davies all offer options. Minutes would have been scarce in north London.
Inter, by contrast, have been scouring the market for a new right-wing-back. After struggling to reach an agreement for Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby, they switched focus to Spence, whose profile fits perfectly with their system: aggressive, quick, and comfortable operating high up the pitch.
Spurs cash in – and plan the next move
Tottenham signed Spence from Middlesbrough in July 2022 in a deal worth up to £20m, with an initial outlay of around £12.5m. Two years on, they are banking more than double that initial fee, with three years still left on his contract and an option for a further year.
It’s smart business on paper. Emotionally, it is more complicated.
Spurs fans have only seen flashes of what he can do in their colours, but those flashes – combined with his World Cup displays – hinted at a player who might yet have become central to their plans. Letting that potential leave for £30m will divide opinion.
Spence himself is keen on the move. His six-month loan spell with Genoa from January 2024 gave him a taste of Serie A and Italian football’s rhythm, and he impressed enough to convince clubs there he could thrive with a bigger platform.
Tottenham, though, have not been caught cold. They have been preparing for his possible departure and already have options lined up as they search for a replacement on the flanks.
Inter get their new weapon out wide. Spurs walk away with a profit and a gap to fill. The next question is simple: who moves next in this chain of full-back reshuffles?
