Inter Milan Signs Djed Spence from Tottenham on Five-Year Deal
Inter Milan have wrapped up the signing of England full-back Djed Spence from Tottenham, tying the defender to a five-year contract at San Siro.
The Serie A champions are understood to be paying around 30m euros (£25.6m) for the 26-year-old, who becomes the second England international to join Simone Inzaghi’s side this summer after John Stones arrived on a free following the expiry of his Manchester City deal.
Farewell to Spurs, hello to San Siro
The move had been effectively sealed hours before the announcement. Spence took to social media on Saturday to say goodbye to Tottenham supporters, signalling the end of a four-year spell in north London.
“A special chapter comes to an end, It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao,” he wrote.
He went on to thank “all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family and most importantly… the fans,” before signing off with a nod to what comes next: “Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.”
That new chapter leads straight into the heart of an Inter side looking to stay on top in Italy and push again in Europe, with Spence recruited to add power and depth down the flank.
From World Cup mainstay to crowded Spurs back line
Spence heads to Milan on the back of a demanding season for club and country. He featured in all eight of England’s matches at the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s team battled their way to a third-place finish, underlining his status as a trusted option on the biggest stage.
At club level he remained heavily involved. The full-back made 44 appearances for Spurs in all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign, a sign of his durability and importance in Roberto de Zerbi’s first season in charge.
But the landscape shifted quickly. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro committed his future to the club with a new contract in June, while Tottenham also moved to strengthen the opposite flank, bringing in Andy Robertson from Liverpool. The competition on both sides of the defence suddenly hardened.
De Zerbi had publicly expressed his wish in July to convince Spence to stay and fight for his place. The market, and Inter’s persistence, have taken the decision out of his hands.
A successful Spurs spell and a return to Italy
Spence leaves Tottenham with a solid body of work behind him. Signed from Middlesbrough in 2022 for an initial £12.5m, he went on to make 85 appearances for the north London club, growing from promising addition to key European performer.
His standout achievement came in the 2024-25 season, when he helped Spurs lift the Europa League title, delivering on the continental stage and adding a major trophy to the club’s recent history.
Italy will not be new territory. Spence already sampled Serie A life during a six-month loan at Genoa in 2024, a spell that now looks like a dress rehearsal for a more permanent role on the peninsula.
This time, though, he walks into a dressing room of champions, with a long contract, a significant fee on his shoulders and a clear challenge: to turn World Cup consistency and Europa League pedigree into a defining spell at the top of Italian football.
