Ismaël Bennacer's Milan Journey Ends as He Joins Al-Gharafa
AC Milan have closed the book on one of the quieter pillars of their recent revival. Ismaël Bennacer’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent, clearing the way for the Algerian midfielder to join Al-Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League.
It ends a six-year spell that rarely chased headlines but often dictated games.
From Scudetto cornerstone to injury exile
Bennacer has not played a competitive minute for Milan since February 2025, his career abruptly stalled by a serious knee injury. The lay-off pushed him into two loan spells, first at Marseille, then at Dinamo Zagreb, as he tried to rediscover rhythm far from San Siro.
The numbers tell part of the story. Signed from Empoli in 2019, he made 178 appearances in red and black. Only six players – headed by Rafael Leão’s 291 games – have featured more for the club in that period. The rest is written in the way Milan’s midfield changed when he was fit and firing.
Under Stefano Pioli, Bennacer became a key axis in the side that dragged Milan back to the top of Serie A. The 2021-22 Scudetto, the club’s 19th, owed plenty to his blend of bite and calm in the middle of the pitch. When Milan needed control, he offered it. When they needed aggression, he supplied that too.
Then the knee went, and the story never quite recovered.
A farewell with weight
The end did not come in a packed stadium, but on a screen. In an emotional video posted on social media, Bennacer addressed the supporters who had taken to him from the start.
“Dear Milan fans. Last year, I said goodbye without ever thinking those words would turn out to be a farewell,” he said, laying bare the sense that this was not how he had imagined his exit.
“For more than five years, I wore this shirt with pride and passion alongside incredible team-mates, supported by your unconditional love. Winning the Scudetto in this shirt is one of the most beautiful memories of my career, and playing in front of you at San Siro was one of the greatest honours.”
No drama, no controversy. Just a player who understood what the shirt meant, and a club that knew what he had given.
With the contract termination, any prospect of another comeback in Milan colours disappears. The curtain falls cleanly, not with a loan or an option, but with a full stop.
A new chapter in Qatar
Now comes Al-Gharafa and a different type of challenge. The Qatari side, coached by Pedro Martins, are coming off a fourth-place finish and are looking for experience and personality in the middle of the pitch. Bennacer, at 28, is neither a fading veteran nor an untested prospect; he arrives with a title in Italy, European nights, and scars to prove it.
For him, this is a reset. For Al-Gharafa, it is a statement that they can attract a player who, not long ago, was central to a title-winning project at one of Europe’s great clubs.
Milan move on under Amorim
While Bennacer turns the page, Milan are already deep into their next chapter under new head coach Ruben Amorim. The Rossoneri are wrapping up their Asian pre-season tour, with a friendly against Chelsea at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on the agenda.
From there, the travel does not stop. Manchester United await at the Tarczynski Arena in Poland, another high-profile rehearsal before the real business begins.
On 23 August, Milan open their 2026-27 Serie A campaign away to Torino. By then, Bennacer will be thousands of kilometres away, starting again in Qatar, while Amorim’s Milan try to build a midfield – and an identity – that no longer has him at its heart.
The question now is simple: who becomes the next quiet cornerstone in a position he once made his own?
