IUP Settles for Draw Against Clarion Despite Dominance
INDIANA, Pa. – IUP had the ball, the chances, and the pressure. Clarion had the ruthlessness.
In the end, the numbers and the scoreline didn’t quite match as the Crimson Hawks were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at South Campus Field, despite a dominant display and a two-goal performance from Kat Morgan.
Morgan at the double, but IUP left wanting
Morgan set the tone early. In the ninth minute, she broke the game open, latching onto a pass from Melody Leiva and burying the opener to give IUP a 1-0 lead and early control of the match.
That control didn’t last long on the scoreboard.
Clarion hit back six minutes later, leveling through Leah Deal in the 15th minute. One chance, one goal, and the Golden Eagles were suddenly on equal footing despite spending long stretches without the ball.
The visitors then flipped the script completely. In the 30th minute, Sofia Barba struck to give Clarion a 2-1 lead, sending IUP into halftime trailing despite a strong attacking half. Clarion had turned its limited looks into a halftime advantage, punishing the Crimson Hawks’ few defensive lapses.
Second-half siege
After the break, IUP tightened its grip on the match and never really let go.
The Crimson Hawks outshot Clarion 8-0 over the final 45 minutes, pinning the Golden Eagles deep and repeatedly testing goalkeeper Sage Sherk. Every clearance seemed to come straight back. Every loose ball seemed to fall to a red shirt.
The pressure finally told in the 74th minute.
Morgan, dangerous all afternoon, found the equalizer with her second goal of the day, dragging IUP back to 2-2. She finished with four shots, all on target, and carried the attack as IUP chased a winner that never quite arrived.
Sherk stood tall for Clarion, making seven saves as IUP poured forward. Clarion, by contrast, needed only two shots on goal all game – and scored from both.
Dominance without the win
The stat sheet told the story of IUP’s control: a 14-3 advantage in total shots, nine on target, and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. The Crimson Hawks lived in Clarion’s half, especially after the interval, but couldn’t find the decisive third goal.
Leiva backed up her early assist with three shots of her own. Ayla Cook and Charlotte De Keukelaere each registered two attempts, while Zoe Ans-Bitchoka and Avery Clanton also tested Sherk as IUP kept turning the screw.
At the other end, junior goalkeeper Sarah Gatz went the full 90 minutes for the Crimson Hawks. She faced only two efforts on frame – both ended up in the net.
The draw moves IUP to 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-2 in PSAC play, while Clarion improves to 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference. For the Crimson Hawks, this was a point earned through persistence, but also a reminder: if they keep dictating games like this, how long before the results start to match the performance?
