Jamal Musiala Addresses Neurological Issue After Collapsing Twice
Jamal Musiala has revealed he is dealing with a neurological issue after collapsing twice in a week during Bayern Munich’s preseason, but insists he faces no long-term health risk and is already focused on recovery.
The 23-year-old Germany international went down again on Wednesday (AEST), shortly after coming on as a second-half substitute in a friendly in Heidenheim. Teammates and opponents quickly formed a protective circle as medical staff rushed on, before Musiala was helped to his feet and guided off the pitch.
It was the second scare in a matter of days. On Sunday (AEST), during a friendly against Leipzig, Musiala had also collapsed. He was able to leave the field on his own then, though witnesses reported he still looked visibly dazed.
This time, Musiala chose to address the situation directly. In a message posted on Instagram after Wednesday’s game, he explained that doctors had diagnosed him with temporary “but easily treatable absence seizures” linked to a neurological problem.
“These can lead to the moments that happened recently, such as against Leipzig or even now in Heidenheim,” he wrote, outlining the cause of the sudden collapses that had alarmed teammates, coaches, and fans.
Bayern’s official match report struck a far more restrained tone, noting only that “there was a setback when Jamal Musiala had to be subbed off with a knock minutes after coming on,” and offering no detail on the underlying condition.
Musiala moved to calm fears himself. He stressed that specialists had reassured him about the broader implications of the diagnosis.
“The important thing is that there is no additional health risk,” he wrote, adding that he was “very optimistic” and receiving excellent medical care.
He also made it clear he wants to stay as close as possible to normal life and football, as long as doctors agree.
“In close coordination and regular communication with experts, it has been my personal wish to face the challenge and, with the endorsement of the neurological specialists, to devote myself to what helps me most in recovery: to simply live my everyday life and keep up with my passion of playing football,” Musiala said.
Upcoming Match
Bayern now turn toward Sunday’s German Supercup against Borussia Dortmund at 4:30am AEST, the traditional curtain-raiser to the Bundesliga season. Whether Musiala will be passed fit to feature in that showcase remains uncertain, but the bigger question for club and country is clear: how quickly can one of Europe’s brightest talents put this worrying week behind him and return to doing what he does best?
