James Maddison Cleared to Play Against Crystal Palace

James Maddison has been cleared to face Crystal Palace on Saturday, easing fears that Tottenham’s playmaker had suffered another serious setback.

The 29-year-old limped off early in the second half of Spurs’ 2-0 win at Chelsea, a worrying sight for a player whose last year has been dominated by rehab rooms and medical reports. Given his history, alarm bells rang quickly.

He spent most of last season recovering from a torn ACL. On the opening weekend of this campaign, just as he was supposed to be turning a corner, he fractured his shoulder in defeat at Brentford. Tottenham lost a creator; Maddison lost momentum yet again.

His return earlier this month felt like a reset. Back in the starting XI, he announced himself with a stunning goal in a 3-1 victory over Coventry, the kind of strike that reminds everyone why Spurs paid £40m to prise him from Leicester City in 2023 and handed him a five-year deal.

So when he hobbled off at Stamford Bridge, concern spread quickly through the club and the fanbase. Another lay-off? Another chapter in a stop-start Spurs career?

Not this time.

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Maddison will be available for the visit of Palace, even if his preparation has been carefully managed.

“This week he didn't work like the other players, but for tomorrow he is available and he is a special player for us,” the Tottenham manager said. The choice of words was deliberate: special, and worth protecting.

De Zerbi knows the balance he must strike with a player coming off consecutive major injuries. “For James Maddison or the players who are coming from a long injury, they have to work more than the other players, but he has already four or five weeks – he is working very hard and consistently.

“So, I think it's not a problem if he loses two days [training], but then we have to analyse if we take the risk or not.”

That is the equation now. Tottenham have won both league games since Maddison’s return to the starting line-up, against Coventry and Chelsea, and have dragged themselves out of the relegation zone and up to 14th in the Premier League. They look a different side with him on the pitch: quicker between the lines, sharper in the final third, more confident on the ball.

His numbers back up the eye test. Since arriving in north London, Maddison has produced 17 goals and 21 assists in 85 appearances. For a team trying to rebuild its identity and climb back towards the European places, those contributions are not a luxury. They are a necessity.

Palace will arrive knowing exactly who dictates the rhythm when Spurs are at their best. Tottenham, for their part, know that every minute Maddison spends on the grass could shape the direction of their season from here.
