James Trafford: Leeds United's Solution for Premier League Goalkeeper
James Trafford has emerged as Leeds United’s prime solution to a problem they can’t afford to get wrong.
Daniel Farke needs a new No.1. Not a squad option, not a project. A goalkeeper to walk straight into the Premier League and own the shirt. According to The Athletic, the man at the top of that list is the 23-year-old Manchester City stopper, and talks between the clubs are under way.
Leeds’ goalkeeping reset
Leeds have been stripped of both of last season’s main options. Karl Darlow, who finished the campaign as first choice, has left for Manchester United on a free. Illan Meslier has gone too, snapped up by Arsenal. In the space of one summer, Farke has lost his established hierarchy.
Lucas Perri, signed from Lyon last year on a four-year deal, and Alex Cairns remain on the books, but neither has yet convinced as a long-term Premier League No.1. Farke wants a clear leader in goal before the 2026/27 season kicks off. That urgency has pushed Trafford to the front of the queue.
Trafford’s City frustration
Newcastle United know all about Trafford’s talent. They tried to sign him last summer, only to see him choose a return to Manchester City from Burnley. The pitch was simple: Ederson’s move to Fenerbahce would open the door for Trafford to become first choice at the Etihad.
For a moment, it looked like the perfect step. Then City moved for Gianluigi Donnarumma late in the window. The dynamic changed overnight. Trafford slid to No.2 and spent the 2025/26 season as the back-up.
He did not hide his disappointment. Speaking in February, he admitted being second choice “wasn't what I expected” and that he had “tried to guard against the situation happening”. Even so, he still forced his way into 17 appearances across all competitions, playing his part as City lifted both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Trophies are one thing. The bench is another. Trafford now wants what every ambitious goalkeeper craves: a full Premier League season as an undisputed No.1.
Leeds move to the front of the queue
That is where Leeds step in. The project at Elland Road offers exactly what City cannot: guaranteed competition to be first choice, a clear pathway, and a club openly “desperate” for a new starting goalkeeper.
The Athletic reports that, despite strong and ongoing interest from Newcastle, Trafford is leaning towards Leeds. The pull of regular football appears to outweigh the lure of a deeper, more congested battle for minutes elsewhere.
Newcastle, accepting that reality, have already begun to scan the market for alternatives. Parma’s Zion Suzuki and Brighton’s Carl Rushworth are among the names under consideration as Eddie Howe reshapes his own goalkeeping plans.
Proven pedigree, rising profile
For Leeds, Trafford is not a gamble plucked from obscurity. His two seasons at Burnley established him as one of the Championship’s standout keepers. He was the undisputed No.1 at Turf Moor and a central figure in a defence that conceded just 16 goals in 46 league matches in the 2024/25 campaign – a remarkable statistic at any level.
That form carried him onto the international stage. Born in Cockermouth, Trafford made his England debut in March, the first of two caps so far, and earned a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Those milestones have only sharpened his sense that he must now be playing every week.
A decisive call for club and country
For Farke and Leeds, this is about more than filling a vacancy. It is about setting the tone for a Premier League return with a goalkeeper who can grow with the squad rather than merely cover a gap.
For Trafford, it is about choosing between the prestige of City’s bench and the responsibility of Leeds’ goalmouth.
The talks are under way. The need at Elland Road is obvious. The question now is whether a young England international is ready to bet his future on being the man who solves it.
