Jamie Carragher Warns Arsenal of Title Risks Against PSG
Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal stand on the brink of something huge – and something potentially damaging – as the Premier League run‑in collides with a looming Champions League final against PSG.
Mikel Arteta’s side have seized control of the title race over the last fortnight. Wins over Newcastle United and Fulham, followed by Manchester City’s stumble against Everton, have pushed Arsenal five points clear. City still hold a game in hand, but the dynamic has shifted: Arsenal set the pace, City chase.
This weekend could harden that narrative or blow it wide open.
City go first, at home to Brentford on Saturday night. Arsenal then walk into a trap of a fixture: away to relegation-threatened West Ham on Sunday afternoon, a game loaded with subplots and consequences across the top of the table.
Carragher, speaking to The Metro at The 2026 Women’s Football Awards, pinned that trip to the London Stadium as a potential tipping point.
“That’s the game that can go either way, but if Arsenal get over the line against West Ham, I can’t see them messing it up from there,” he said.
For Carragher, it is more than just another away day.
“When you think about it, it could arguably be the biggest game of the season. But for lots of other teams, it’s probably the biggest game for West Ham. They have to get something.
“It’s a huge game for Tottenham, because of the angle of West Ham. It’s a huge game for Man City, because of Arsenal’s situation.
“I just think that game at the weekend is so big, not just for the two teams involved, it’s huge for both of them. But also what it does for City and Tottenham.”
The pressure finally narrows onto one blunt question: what happens if Arsenal don’t finish the job?
For Carragher, that’s where the Champions League final enters dangerous territory.
“That game will be a real problem if they don’t win the league,” he warned, turning the spotlight on the clash with PSG.
“I think that’ll be a problem. Yes, you want to win everything, but I think Arsenal really want to win the league.
“They wouldn’t turn their noses up at the Champions League, but I think Liverpool were in that situation a few years ago, where they’d gone so long without winning the league that they just wanted it done.”
Carragher has long argued that the Champions League carries the greater global prestige. Yet the weight of history, he suggests, changes the emotional stakes for a club starved of a domestic crown.
“For me, more often than I always say, the Champions League is a bigger trophy to win. But I think when you’ve gone so long without the league, they’ll be desperate for that.”
The equation, in his eyes, is clear. Win the league from this position and Arsenal arrive at the final with momentum, belief, and a sense of fulfilment. Lose it, and the Champions League showpiece risks feeling like a consolation under the harshest possible spotlight.
“But I think if they win it, which they should do, the position that they’re in right now, I think it’ll give them a huge boost.
“They will need that going into the final. I think we all know PSG are the better team, but that doesn’t mean Arsenal can’t win a one-off game.”
The title race, then, is no longer just about a trophy. For Arsenal, it may define the mood, the confidence, and the psychological edge they carry into a night against PSG that could reshape how this entire season is remembered.
