Jan Paul van Hecke Chooses Tottenham, Leaving Liverpool Disappointed
Jan Paul van Hecke has made his choice. And it is bad news for Liverpool.
The Brighton and Hove Albion defender, tracked by a cluster of Premier League heavyweights, is understood to have set his heart on a move to Tottenham Hotspur to reunite with Roberto De Zerbi, leaving Liverpool’s defensive rebuild facing an early setback.
Liverpool look, Spurs move
Liverpool’s need is obvious. With Ibrahima Konate heading for the exit and Virgil van Dijk deep into the veteran stage of his career, the Anfield hierarchy have been scouring the market for a centre-back who can anchor the next era under Andoni Iraola.
Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are already lined up for squad roles next season, but both are projects, not instant solutions. Liverpool want someone who can walk straight into the team and handle the weight of expectation.
Jan Paul van Hecke fit that brief. According to Dutch outlet VI, Liverpool made contact with the 26-year-old Netherlands international, whose current deal at Brighton runs to 2027. Chelsea and Newcastle United also monitored the situation, sensing an opportunity to prise away one of last season’s standout defenders on the south coast.
For months, Van Hecke has been on the radar of several top-flight clubs. VI describe him as Brighton’s “absolute star player” last season, a defender whose composure and aggression have finally caught up with his potential.
Yet while Liverpool circled, Tottenham acted.
Spurs have already lodged two bids and are preparing a third, determined to get a deal over the line. Personal terms are understood to be agreed, and the London club are now driving the move, confident that the player’s stance is firmly in their favour.
De Zerbi factor tilts the race
The turning point lies in the dugout. Van Hecke knows Roberto De Zerbi well from their time together at Brighton, and those conversations have clearly left a mark.
Reports in the Netherlands say the centre-back “became enthusiastic” after talks with the Italian, who is shaping his Tottenham squad in his own image: aggressive, brave on the ball, and willing to defend on the front foot. Van Hecke has already proved he can thrive in that system.
That familiarity has cut through the noise of rival interest. While English reports have highlighted Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle in recent days, VI now state bluntly that “it has to be Tottenham” for Van Hecke. From the player’s side, the decision is made.
Tottenham, sensing that advantage, are pushing to wrap things up quickly. The aim is clear: finalise the transfer before Van Hecke’s World Cup campaign with the Netherlands, giving him a clean slate and a clear head on the international stage.
Dutch voices weigh in
Inside the Netherlands camp, the move is already a talking point.
Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has been doing his bit, speaking openly about nudging his compatriot towards north London. “I did talk to Jan Paul briefly about Tottenham. I think it is a good step for him,” the centre-back said, underlining how highly Spurs rate the Brighton man.
National team manager Ronald Koeman struck a more measured tone but did not hide his preference for clarity. Asked about the proposed transfer, he said he would “prefer a player to have peace of mind regarding his club” and to have “clarity about the future,” while accepting there is little he can do to halt the process once the market starts moving.
For Van Hecke, that clarity seems close. For Liverpool, who had opened dialogue and saw him as a serious option in a key position, the message is even clearer: the defender they wanted is choosing a different shade of white.
