JJ Gabriel’s sudden Manchester United stand-off deepens, with the teenage forward left out of Friday night’s Premier League 2 clash against Brentford at Leigh Sports Village and no longer training with the club.

The 15-year-old had looked like United’s next fast-track story. He scored in both of United’s Premier League 2 outings this season, announcing himself with the swagger of someone in a hurry.

On 24 August, in his debut at that level, Gabriel lifted the ball coolly over the Ipswich goalkeeper from 20 yards, a finish that turned heads across the academy set-up. Seven days later, he went again: a sharp turn inside the box, one defender beaten, then a composed strike in a 4-1 win over Leicester. Two games, two goals, and a growing sense that United had something special on their hands.

Those moments lit the fuse on talk he could be involved in United’s opening Champions League tie against Azerbaijan champions Sabah. Michael Carrick was in the stands for Gabriel’s first Premier League 2 outing, and senior United coaching staff watched the second. The message seemed obvious: he was on the radar.

Then came the first jolt. When United submitted their A list for the competition – the only route for an under-16 to feature – Gabriel’s name was not on it. United went on to beat Sabah 4-0, with Carrick using all five substitutes by the 72nd minute. Gabriel never came close to the pitch. For a teenager being fast-tracked, that omission landed heavily.

That decision is understood to have been one of the key flashpoints behind what followed, though there had been underlying issues before then. The situation has since escalated into a full-blown stand-off.

Gabriel is no longer training with United. Inside the club, there is still a belief the dispute can be fixed and that the relationship is not beyond repair. But people close to the player see it very differently and do not expect him to play for the club again.

Right now, even his precise whereabouts are unclear. As things stand, it is also thought unlikely he will be selected in any of England’s age-group squads when they are announced on Friday, a stark contrast to the trajectory his season seemed to promise just a few weeks ago.
