Joao Cancelo’s Barcelona Return Gains Momentum
Joao Cancelo’s Barcelona return has taken a major step forward, with reports in Saudi Arabia claiming Al-Hilal are close to agreeing a contract termination that would allow the defender to join the Catalan club on a free transfer.
The Portuguese full-back, under contract with Al-Hilal until 2027, has been the subject of talks between the Saudi Pro League side and Barcelona throughout the summer. Al-Hilal had been seeking a fee believed to be in the region of €10-15 million, a figure that complicated negotiations for a Barca board still working within tight financial limits.
Now the picture has shifted.
Saudi sports daily Arriyadiyah, via reporter Hamad Al-Suwaih, reports that Al-Hilal are “nearing” an agreement to terminate Cancelo’s deal, clearing the way for him to sign directly with Barcelona. If completed, it would turn what looked like a standard transfer tug-of-war into a major piece of business for the Spanish giants, who could secure a starting full-back without paying a fee.
For Cancelo, the direction of travel has never really been in doubt. The defender has been open about his desire to remain at Barcelona after a successful second loan spell last season, when he re-established himself as a key figure and embraced life back at Camp Nou. He has pushed consistently for a permanent solution, making it clear that his priority is to continue in La Liga.
Barcelona have wanted the same outcome. The club see Cancelo’s versatility and attacking threat from the back as vital to their plans, but their room to manoeuvre in the market has been limited. A free transfer would change the equation entirely and turn a difficult negotiation into an opportunistic coup.
With the new La Liga season fast approaching, the timing of this latest twist is crucial. If Al-Hilal complete the termination and Cancelo walks away as a free agent, Barcelona will be perfectly placed to move quickly and bring him back into the squad before the campaign kicks off.
