Joel Piroe Joins West Ham on Loan from Leeds United

West Ham have moved to bolster their attack with the signing of Joel Piroe from Leeds United on a season-long loan, complete with an obligation to buy in the summer of 2027.

The 27-year-old arrives in east London with a fearsome Championship record behind him. Across four seasons in the second tier – first with Swansea City, then Leeds – Piroe struck 73 league goals. At Elland Road he became the focal point of their title-winning 2024-25 campaign, finishing as the club’s top scorer as Leeds powered their way back to the Premier League.

The step up, though, has not yet yielded the same return. Piroe failed to score in 16 Premier League appearances last season, a stark contrast to his prolific form in the division below and a reminder of the gamble West Ham are taking as they look for reliable goals.

For the player, it is a chance to reset and prove he belongs at the top level.

"I think it's a good opportunity for me to show what I've learned and how I've grown as a football player over the years," Piroe told West Ham's website, outlining a move that feels as much about redemption as it does about recruitment.

Born in the Netherlands and now a Suriname international, Piroe’s route to England ran through PSV Eindhoven, where he came through the ranks, and a loan spell at Sparta Rotterdam. It was only after crossing the Channel that his scoring touch truly exploded, turning him into one of the Championship’s most reliable finishers.

West Ham, for now, are keeping the finer details under wraps. The club have not disclosed the agreed fee that will trigger his permanent move in 2027, nor the length of the contract that will follow.

What is clear is that Piroe is part of a broader rebuild. He becomes West Ham’s fifth permanent addition of the summer window, joining Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman, Israel winger Manor Solomon and Belgium midfielder Arne Engels.

The numbers in the Championship say West Ham have signed a proven finisher. The question now is whether Joel Piroe can finally translate that dominance into Premier League goals.
