Johnny Fisher’s Comeback: How Far Can He Rise After Defeat?
On Saturday night, British heavyweight Johnny Fisher steps back into the Copper Box Arena, a place once known as his stronghold. The East London venue saw him grow an undefeated record, with John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" playing during his ring walks and a crowd cheering every punch. But much has shifted since last year when Dave Allen stopped Fisher in the fifth round, handing him his first professional loss and sparking debate over his place in the heavyweight ranks.
Now 27 years old, Fisher headlines a 10-round bout against Belgium's Michael Pirotton, marking his first fight under Dana White's Zuffa Boxing.
Facing Setbacks and Staying Grounded
"Yeah, I had a loss, but one loss can't define your career," Fisher told BBC Sport. "There are many before me, better than me, who have lost and come back."
Unlike many boxers with extensive amateur experience, Fisher's path has been unusual. With just a handful of amateur fights and a background in university rugby, he quickly became a major attraction domestically while still honing his skills.
His appeal grew alongside his father, known as Big John. Their viral Chinese takeaway reviews, Essex humor, and catchphrase "Bosh!" won fans beyond boxing, forming the so-called Bosh Army, a devoted traveling support group.
Trials Inside and Outside the Ring
Fisher started his pro career with 13 straight wins. His first meeting with Allen in December 2024 was a close call, winning by a split decision that some questioned. Five months later, Allen stopped him convincingly. His next fight, a fourth-round stoppage win over Ivan Balaz, didn’t fully silence critics.
These moments raised doubts about his skill set and opened him up to harsher scrutiny from the public and media. Fisher recognizes the fickle nature of support.
"My fanbase is loyal, but when things go well, people jump on the bandwagon. When it goes wrong, some are quick to say, ‘We knew he’d never make it,’ or ‘He’s no good.’"
Some online comments suggested Fisher might be better suited for crossover boxing rather than serious heavyweight competition, but he dismisses the idea that he's merely an influencer boxer.
"There are guys with hardly any boxing experience and millions of followers on YouTube, like Jake Paul and Tommy Fury, who aren’t even at my level," he said. "If you have a following, that’s special, but I’m a professional boxer first."
New Beginnings with Zuffa Boxing
After five years with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, Fisher signed with Zuffa Boxing in July, calling the financial offer impossible to turn down.
"Our health isn’t guaranteed in this sport, and neither are our finances," Fisher said. His initial meeting with Dana White happened over a Chinese meal shared with his father. "It was great to break bread—or prawn crackers—over a Chinese," he added.
There’s also been a shift in training. Fisher parted ways with long-time coach Mark Tibbs and now works with Tony Sims. He admits previous camps sometimes felt unstructured, but this one involved around 160 rounds of sparring, altitude training, and early morning hill sprints.
Realistic Goals and Looking Ahead
Despite the changes, Fisher keeps a modest view of his standing.
"I’m not Usyk, I’m no AJ, I’m not Fury. I’m not at the top of the division," he said. He mentioned fighters like Frazer Clarke and Solomon Dacres as domestic rivals and said fighting for the British title within 12 to 18 months would be incredible.
Current British champion Richard Riakporhe has already expressed interest in facing Fisher should he defeat Pirotton, though Riakporhe would be a significant challenge.
"All I’ve got to do is win my next fight—that’s what matters. Then the picture becomes clearer. My goal is always to enjoy myself and give it a good shot."
