Jorge Jesus: A Confident Exit from Al-Nassr After Title Success
Jorge Jesus has never been short of self-belief. Asked whether he would feel proud if Pep Guardiola followed him into the Al-Nassr job, the veteran coach barely let the question land.
“Pride? No… why?” he shot back. “He's the one who should be proud to replace me, not me for him.”
It was classic Jesus: unapologetically direct, utterly convinced of his own work, and in no mood to play the supporting role in someone else’s story.
Ronaldo’s call and a brutal challenge
Jesus walked into Al-Nassr with his eyes open. The invitation came from Cristiano Ronaldo and close friend Jose Semedo, and the Portuguese coach knew immediately this would not be a gentle late-career posting.
“When I accepted this challenge, when Cristiano Ronaldo and [Jose] Semedo invited me, I knew it would be the most difficult challenge of my coaching career,” he explained. “To win this championship, we had to be much better than our opponents. As I told Cris: ‘I'll help you become champion and then I'll go on with my life.’”
That line became his internal contract. Deliver the title. Then walk away.
He did exactly that, leaving on a high after securing domestic success and sticking to his original plan, even as the club sounded him out over a longer stay.
One year only
Al-Nassr wanted two years. Jesus refused.
“When I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo, initially they invited me to sign a two-year contract, but I only wanted to do one year,” he said. “That's what I always do at the clubs I'm at.”
This wasn’t just a quirk of personality. It was a calculation. The Saudi Pro League, with its intensity, travel, and scrutiny, took a toll.
“It was a very tough championship, you have to make decisions, often putting your body on the line, and it's very tiring. It was a wonderful year, I have to enjoy it somewhere else.”
He made no attempt to dress it up. The job drains you. The demands are constant. For a 69-year-old coach who has spent decades on the touchline, that matters.
‘I only accept this project because of you’
At the heart of his decision to go in the first place stood Ronaldo. Jesus didn’t hide it.
“He has a very great passion for football. I told him: ‘I only accept this project because of you, otherwise I wouldn't come. We're going to win both and you're going to leave here with a title.’ That's what happened.”
The relationship between the two Portuguese figures framed the whole adventure. Ronaldo needed a coach who believed he could still bend a league to his will. Jesus needed a player who could carry the weight of his ideas on the pitch.
They struck a pact. They left with a trophy.
What next for Jesus – and Guardiola?
Now Jesus steps back into the market with his stock high once again. He has already been there and done it in Saudi Arabia. He has already walked away on his own terms.
Interest from Turkey is gathering pace. Fenerbahce, where he worked from 2022 to 2023, are among the clubs linked with bringing him back. The fit is obvious: a huge club, a demanding crowd, and a coach who thrives amid pressure and expectation. A decision is expected in the coming weeks.
His remarks, though, did more than frame his own future. By casually entertaining the idea of Guardiola one day succeeding him at Al-Nassr, Jesus poured fresh fuel onto speculation around the Catalan’s next move.
Guardiola is widely expected to leave Manchester City at the end of the season. His next destination remains unknown, but the combination of Saudi money, Ronaldo’s presence, and now Jesus’ pointed comments ensures Al-Nassr will stay in the conversation.
Jesus has gone, title in hand, convinced he leaves a job worth inheriting. If Guardiola ever does walk through that door, he will not just be following Ronaldo.
He will be stepping into a seat a very proud Jorge Jesus insists is anything but a downgrade.
