Jude Bellingham's Rise and Jobe's Path at Borussia Dortmund
Jude Bellingham arrives at England camp now with the aura of a fully-fledged Galactico. Real Madrid’s midfield star has been drafted into the latest UEFA Nations League squad on the back of a World Cup that sent his reputation stratospheric.
Seven goals at the 2026 tournament. A driving force in a run to the semi-finals. A third-place finish secured. At 23, he is no longer the prodigy. He is the standard.
For a while, the conversation around St George’s Park hinted at something even more eye-catching: two Bellinghams in the same senior squad. The idea hasn’t gone away, but it has been parked.
Jobe Bellingham, three years younger and carving out his own career at Borussia Dortmund, will stay with England’s U21s for now. After a difficult first season in Germany as he tried to follow Jude’s route through Dortmund, the 20-year-old has steadied himself and begun to climb again. Thomas Tuchel and his staff are watching closely, content to let him develop a level below while the spotlight burns brightest on his brother.
The prospect of a Bellingham double act in an England shirt inevitably draws comparisons with famous family pairings of the past: Bobby and Jack Charlton, Gary and Phil Neville. That history carries weight. So do the boots that need filling.
Former England striker Bobby Zamora, speaking to GOAL in association with BetWright Premier League betting, did not sugarcoat the scale of the task.
“Bloody hell, another pair of boots that you've got to fill there, to challenge your brother!” he said, laughing at the thought before turning serious.
“We are quite blessed with a lot of good midfielders. So, if he can go in and challenge his brother, then we're a very lucky country. But Jude is extremely special. He's one in a generation. So, if Jobe can get close to him, we're very, very lucky. But I think Jude is just a little bit too good.”
That is the reality Jobe lives with. Every touch, every move, measured against a sibling who has become one of the defining players of his era.
Jobe has pushed hard to step out of that shadow. Leaving Sunderland for Dortmund was not a sentimental nod to family history, he insists, but a decision rooted in what he believes is best for his own career.
“I don’t think my path has been the same as Jude’s at all,” he said when the move was confirmed.
“But, it meant if the right path meant signing for Borussia Dortmund, as so many top young players have done, not just me and my brother, then why would I not do it? It would be a big mistake to sign for another club just because Jude’s played here and it didn’t go well.”
Both brothers emerged from Birmingham City’s academy, earmarked early as special talents. Both left England young. Both now operate in the unforgiving glare of elite European football. The similarities are obvious. Jobe’s insistence is that the journey, and the destination, do not have to be identical.
Heading into the 2026-27 Season
His language has shifted from promise to responsibility.
“I've played a lot of games in my career, and I'm not a young kid anymore,” he told reporters. “There are a lot of players who are younger than me, and I feel like I've got the experience.
“I think experience is about taking on board what you learn, not just playing in the games. I've had so many experiences to learn from in my career so far, and I feel like I can step up, improve, and do even more with the experience that I've got.”
That mindset will decide how quickly the England dream becomes a reality. For now, Jude drives the senior side, the “one in a generation” talent Zamora describes, the Galactico in white leading the Three Lions through another campaign.
Jobe watches, learns, and builds in Dortmund. The day the two Bellinghams walk out together for England feels inevitable to many. The real intrigue lies in what kind of player Jobe will be when that moment finally comes – and whether he is still chasing Jude, or standing alongside him as an equal.
