“I had a few conversations with him and, for various reasons, it didn’t happen, but hopefully one day we’ll be able to play together.”
At the time, those words sounded like a simple wish between teammates. Today, they read like a roadmap.
Atlético’s hierarchy believe that if they can finally bring Romero to the Metropolitano, the impact on Álvarez will be immediate. It would be a statement: the club are not bracing for his exit, they are investing to match his ambitions.
For a player who has made clear his desire to leave, that kind of gesture matters.
Barcelona wait for the crack in the door
Barcelona, though, are not stepping aside.
Hansi Flick has placed Álvarez near the top of his list, and the Catalan club remain in constant contact with the player’s camp.
