Julian Alvarez’s transfer saga took another twist this week, with the Argentine forward holding a direct, face-to-face conversation with Diego Simeone as Barcelona continue to circle.
According to Pedro Fullana, Alvarez requested clarity before Wednesday’s training session, speaking with his manager to lay out his stance amid growing uncertainty over his future at Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old has become one of the headline stories of the summer after making it clear he wants to leave, with Barcelona identified as his preferred destination. That desire has not changed. The problem for him is that Simeone’s stance has not shifted either.
The Atletico coach still sees Alvarez as a cornerstone of his project and does not want to lose him.
Face-to-face in Madrid
Alvarez rejoined Atletico’s main group on Wednesday, taking part in his first full session with the Rojiblancos since returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. On Tuesday, he had only undergone medical tests and worked alone.
Before the squad went to work, the two Argentines spoke directly about the forward’s future. Alvarez set out his position; Simeone reiterated his wish to keep him. No intermediaries. No filters.
From the player’s side, the message remains consistent: he wants a different outcome, and that outcome points firmly towards Barcelona.
Barcelona wait, Atletico dig in
Inside the market, it is no secret that Barcelona are the only club actively pushing to sign Alvarez. They have made him a priority. Atletico, though, have been just as clear in the opposite direction.
The Madrid club have repeatedly refused to open the door to negotiations, and their leadership has lined up behind that position. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has publicly backed the club’s hard line, leaning on two powerful arguments: a contract that runs until 2030 and a €500 million release clause.
Those numbers hand Atletico huge leverage in any potential talks. For Barcelona, they form a wall.
The tension does not end there. Relations between the two clubs have been strained by Barcelona’s contacts with Alvarez’s camp while the striker remains under contract at Atletico, a move that triggered an extraordinary disciplinary procedure by the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
Even with that backdrop, Barcelona have not walked away. Their interest is alive, but Atletico’s refusal to engage means any deal would require a dramatic shift in the landscape.
For now, Alvarez trains under a coach who wants him to stay, while his heart looks toward Camp Nou. One of them will have to give.
