Three and a half years ago, Treu was captaining Freiburg's second team in the third division. Instead of settling as a backup in Freiburg’s Bundesliga squad, he moved to FC St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga for €500,000 in summer 2023. He immediately helped St. Pauli secure promotion and then kept them in the top flight the following season.

By 2025, Freiburg brought him back for €5.5 million, significantly more than what they earned from his transfer two years prior. Sporting director Klemens Hartenbach praised Treu's development and the value he brings. Today, his market value stands around €15 million.
