Juventus Closing in on Jhon Lucumí: Contract Agreement Reached
Juventus are closing in on Jhon Lucumí, and this time it is not the money doing the talking.
The Bologna centre-back has given the Bianconeri his word, reaching an agreement in principle on a five-year contract worth €2.5m per season plus bonuses. Nottingham Forest put more cash on the table – around €1m net more each year – and Chelsea and Manchester United tested the waters. Lucumí still chose Turin.
For the Colombian, the pull of a bigger stage has outweighed a bigger salary. The prospect of fighting for trophies, playing European football and staying in Serie A has tipped the scales firmly in Juventus’ favour.
Spalletti’s defensive priority
Luciano Spalletti pushed hard. After Lucumí’s assured World Cup performances – highlighted by the way he shut down Cristiano Ronaldo – the Juventus coach circled his name and underlined it. A commanding, left-sided defender, comfortable stepping out with the ball and relishing duels, fit perfectly into the rebuild he has in mind.
Once Spalletti made his choice clear, Juventus moved with intent. Talks with the player’s camp progressed quickly, their determination leaving a strong impression on Lucumí and helping them fend off the Premier League interest. The player’s side is done. The hard part now sits in Bologna’s offices.
Bologna hold the key
Bologna know exactly what they have. Lucumí is not just a reliable defender; he is a leader in Thiago Motta’s back line, a reference point in and out of possession. They had a €28m release clause in place, but that expired in mid-July, handing them more room to negotiate – at least on paper.
Their internal valuation sets the floor at €25m. Anything less will be a difficult sell to a club that has built its recent rise on smart recruitment and strong sales. Yet there is a clock ticking in the background: Lucumí’s contract runs out in 10 months.
That changes the tone of every conversation. Push too hard and Bologna risk watching their defensive cornerstone walk away for nothing next summer. So they must strike a balance – extracting a fee that reflects his status without scaring off their best offer.
Juventus sense that leverage. With the player already aligned on personal terms and intent on the move, the Bianconeri can afford to be patient, testing Bologna’s resolve as the window wears on.
The agreement with Lucumí is in place. The coach has made his choice. The only question now is how long Bologna can hold their line before the market, and the calendar, force their hand.
