Juventus Pursue Joshua Zirkzee as Premier League Exit Looms
Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter is already edging towards its final pages. The Dutch forward, once heralded as a long-term attacking solution at Old Trafford, is now at the centre of a summer tug-of-war – with Juventus pushing hardest to take him away.
United are open to a sale. Zirkzee is listening.
According to The Athletic, two unnamed Premier League clubs have tested the waters, sounding out his situation as they look to exploit his stalled development in England. Ajax also picked up the phone to ask about United’s stance, only to step back once their own attacking rebuild took shape with the arrivals of Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare. With their forward line stocked, the Dutch route home has effectively closed.
Italy, though, is calling again.
Juventus sense an opportunity
Juventus have moved with purpose. The Turin club are working on a loan deal, confident that they can revive the form that made Zirkzee one of Serie A’s most intriguing talents in 2023-24. The 23-year-old has given the move his approval, keen on a return to a league that once showcased his best football.
For Juve, it is a calculated play: a technically refined striker, proven in Italian football, available at a moment when his value has dipped and his confidence needs rebuilding. For Zirkzee, it is a potential reset.
From Bologna star to Premier League struggle
United paid £36.5 million to bring him from Bologna in 2024, a fee that reflected both his breakout Serie A campaign and the expectation that he would grow into a leading figure in their attack. He arrived with a reputation for intelligent movement, soft feet, and link-up play that could knit together an inconsistent forward line.
The Premier League has not been kind.
Across the past two seasons, Zirkzee has managed just 19 starts in 56 league appearances. Five goals is a thin return for a striker signed to be a difference-maker, and the rhythm he enjoyed in Italy has rarely appeared in England’s more frantic, physical environment. He has often looked like a player trapped between roles: not quite the penalty-box predator, not always trusted as the creative hub.
United’s patience has not run out, but their stance is clear. For the right structure and the right deal, they are prepared to move him on.
A reminder of the talent
There are still flashes. In pre-season against Rosenborg, Zirkzee produced the kind of moment that explains why clubs continue to circle: an excellent goal, the sort that blends technique, composure and timing, and hints at a ceiling far higher than his Premier League numbers suggest.
That strike will not erase two difficult years. It does, however, act as a reminder – to Juventus, to those unnamed Premier League suitors, and perhaps to United themselves – that the raw material is still there.
The question now is simple: will the next phase of his career be about proving England wrong, or proving Italy right?
